Keep

edit

Leave it alone - the detail that a Downtown Winnipeg article (concerning buildings, neighbourhoods, activities, etc.) has the potential to spawn would be excessive in a general article about the City. --207.161.43.98 15:36, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Keep, the article is one of many with descriptions of the various areas of Winnipeg. The main Winnipeg article, due to length considerations, should be more general.--209.115.235.79 19:13, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Canadian Museum for Human Rights

edit

I feel the Canadian Museum for Human Rights shouldn't be included in the list of Landmarks because it hasn't been built yet. -- Jimj wpg 18:38, 24 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wide streets

edit

Can someone please comment on why the streets are so wide? Main street is 123ft wide.

Streetcars and Red River carts, I've heard...but I have no reference (which would be good to have in the article) --Wtshymanski (talk) 17:04, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

San Francisco

edit

Does not have a population of 7 million people, rather around 700.000. Hence the 'small' downtown... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.30.37.143 (talk) 13:38, 2 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Isn't every city's downtown about a half-mile radius around the train station/hotel/City Hall? The description of Winnipeg's downtown as being unually large seems suspcious to me. --Wtshymanski (talk) 17:04, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Removed pictures

edit

I removed two pictures from near the bottom of the page because the article seemed too short to justify having that many pictures and they weren't as relevant as the other pictures in the article. On my screen, they extended far past the end of the article. The remaining pictures are better, I think. Guff Brooking (talk) 23:56, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh yeah, and I deleted the trivia section. There wasn't much in it, and it was badly written. Guff Brooking (talk) 00:02, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Street-level parking

edit

I took it out of the article because it was exaggregated; it's not half or the majority of downtown. If I could find some reliable sources I'd quote the discussion about Winnipeg having too much street-level parking downtown. Like very many Wikipedia articles, we have a string of disconnected facts and no *explanation* for why things are the way they are. Winnipeg is not the only city to discover that no-one needs to go downtown any more. --Wtshymanski (talk) 21:01, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I just re-removed that mention as well. I guess someone who hates parking really thinks that should be in here. I agree there are quite a few "surface parking lots, both paved and unpaved", but they absolutely DO NOT account for a "majority" of the Portage-South land. There's 2 north of Graham, one west of cityplace, and a couple south of St Mary straddling Donald. None of them take up more than half a square block. That's hardly a majority of the land, at most 20%. That there are so many churches in the commerce-heavy area I think is more noteworthy, but that's just me. Remove Downtown Landmarks section?

edit

I don't see the reason for a "downtown landmarks" section. Most of these are mentioned and wikilinked in the downtown district that they belong in. I propose we pull the section, while making sure that all of the relevant landmarks get mentioned elsewhere in the article. Ccyyrree (talk) 19:26, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

No one's argued, so I'm going to remove the section. --Ccyyrree (talk) 16:01, 29 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Why is there even a "Downtown Winnipeg" article? Every city has a "downtown" area, so that's not particularly notable - and we don't have articles on downtown Moscow, Bejing, Rome, Paris or Auckland. --Wtshymanski (talk) 16:53, 29 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Many neighbourhoods in Winnipeg have articles. In any case it looks like this discussion was already held in 2006 and the article was kept. --Ccyyrree (talk) 17:52, 29 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I am impressed with the "maplink" feature used to outline the boundaries of Manhattan in NYC. I'd like to have maplink draw an outline to show the boundaries of downtown Winnipeg. However, I cannot get it to draw.

Here is the page for the tool: Template:Maplink

Downtown Winnipeg 2016 Pop.

edit

About the recent IP edit done on December 20, 2019 to this article. During September 2019 I added an Infobox and filled in some of the parameters. I went to the city's 2016 Census map and figures site (https://www.winnipeg.ca/census/2016/) and tallied up all downtown neighbourhoods. So I came up with the 25,680 in the infobox, from the tally. Fast forward 3 months... When someone asked on the SkyScraperPage.com Forum (Portage Place thread) what the population of downtown Winnipeg was (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?p=8781471#post8781471), I replied with a link to the Downtown Winnipeg article. Someone else replied and saw the discreptancy of figures between the article and the Infobox and and changed to 13,470. Then on December 21, 2019. Fellow regional Wikipedian Wtshymanski reverted the IP edit to the population figure back to the 25,680. Perhaps what I should have done was to put in a detailed tally in the Talk page and discuss which neighbourhoods should and should not be included in this area. Someone else had a 2011 figure that was different, 13,470. So what I'll do is to start a discussion on the Downtown Winnipeg Talk page and we'll see where all can agree or not. But this will have to wait for later as its now almost 5 am and I need to S L E E P. Jimj wpg (talk) 04:27, 21 December 2019 (UTC-6)
