Doctorate?
editCould someone please indicate what discipline Lonnie Smith achieved his doctoral degree in? Was it an earned degree, or honoris causa? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.62.51.196 (talk) 20:12, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
- Don't take things so literally. The good doctor received his degree in awesome improvisation from his friends for his penchant for altering ("doctoring") the music. Viriditas (talk) 07:15, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
Korla Pandit
editLonnie's Turban look is a homage to Korla Pandit, has he ever stated this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.233.13.0 (talk) 23:46, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Requested move 30 August 2023
edit- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved. Consensus that the stage name "Dr. Lonnie Smith" is the WP:COMMONNAME among reliable sources, and thus that it is permissible to include under MOS:DOCTOR. (closed by non-admin page mover) ModernDayTrilobite (talk • contribs) 13:51, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Lonnie Smith (organist) → Dr. Lonnie Smith – Per WP:NCDAB. He is sometimes referred to as just Lonnie Smith but is called "Dr." commonly enough ([1], [2], [3], [4]) that it is better to stick with the policy here Dantus21 (talk) 00:15, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose - Unless he is known exclusively as Dr., leave it out per MOS:DOCTOR. Primergrey (talk) 03:29, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- I afraid to say I don’t understand the problem. I read what you linked, and it stated that
Academic or professional titles (such as "Dr." or "Professor"), including honorary ones, should only be used with the subject of a biography if that subject is widely known by a pseudonym or stage name containing such a title (whether earned or not).
Dr. Lonnie Smith did not earn the title doctor, but he is widely known by his name with the “Dr.” title (as can be seen with the sources above), and per WP:NCDAB should be used instead of the “(organist)” parentheses. - TLDR: The policy you linked doesn’t seem to run counter to my requested move (unless I am missing something). Dantus21 (talk) 04:09, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, "Dr." in this case isn't an academic or professional title (a real doctorate), it's part of his stage name. The sourcing also indicates it's by far the WP:COMMONNAME. Support. HenryMP02 (talk) 22:13, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
