Criticism

The criticism that Goffman created dramaturgy for use only within the context of total institutions does not seem to hold water from the beginning, as I read it. In The Presentation of the Self in Everyday Life, Goffman in his preface writes that the rules are applicable to any "domestic, industrial, or commercial" establishments (pg xi), which when compared to his discussion of the nature of total institutions in Asylums, explicitly excludes such establishments from the definition of total institution on the very first page of the first chapter. This seems like a superficial or hasty criticism to me.
