Drizzt a racist

Would Drizzt be considered a racis?. Because he seems to discriminate against orcs and goblins. True they are monster races, but they are still races. DnD Greg 06:12, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I think Salvatore wrote a sickeningly sweet short story (I think in "Realms of Valor") which made exactly this point where Drizzt learns that even a goblin can be good. JoshuaZ 06:14, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Really whats it called? DnD Greg 23:57, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

"Dark Mirror — A short story about Drizzt and Nojheim the goblin published in Realms of Valor. (1993) " as mentioned in the article —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Fsdemir (talkcontribs) 14:21, 10 December 2006 (UTC).

No, according to D & D rules, rangers have a favoured enemy(s). Drizzt is written as a playble charcter, so he is within his class bahavioural patterns. D&D is more black & white than the real world, and most Orcs and Goblins are evil...Then again, he's Drow...Trekkiexb5 23:07, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I could be very wrong (as I'm not the proverbial D&D lore master), but I'm sure I have read somewhere that the "favoured enemies", at least in 3E, don't automatically mean "hated enemies". So a ranger's favoured enemy would be more a type of creature/race that the ranger is used to deal with more than one-dimensional hatred. I don't have any source though, and so I guess this might be more a personal interpretation more than anything else, but it's food for the thought nonetheless. --DarthMuffin 02:08, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

DarthMuffin is correct on this. Give me a few days and I will dig up the reference in the D&D book. Tin.

Mooshie's Longbow

Yeah it was a +5 holy longbow of orc/troll/giant and halfling slaying! It's stats are super sweet and I saw them in a TSR product. My character used it to kill a Demonlord after I killed Drizzt for it!

Slaying halflings?Mooshie? Are you sure?It should be halforc or something.

Confusing opening statement

What is with that opening statement? "Links point to non-fictional reference unless noted"? Of course they do - all Wikipedia links point to non-fictional references unless noted. Nobody is going to assume that scimitar points to anything but the sword, just as it would in any Wikipedia article about a work of ficiton.

I think the message is not only unnecessary but incredibly confusing - I strongly suggested it be removed. - DavidWBrooks 02:23, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

As I have now done, a week later. - DavidWBrooks 20:03, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)

How to pronounce?

Perhaps this article could use a pronounciation key for his name? Is it actually pronounced a difficult, as-is "Drizzt" (which I can't quite exactly pronounce to sound as it appears, it sounds like "Drist" when I try to pronounce it with two z's before the t), or "Drizzit", or what? --66.120.158.19 22:33, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I'm afraid I don't think we should include any pronounciations in here because it involves us in an ongoing and unsolvable debate. many think it should be said "Drizz-it", others "Drizzt", and even "Drissed" and many more. I think Salvatore said something about being on side for one of them, but really, it just complicates things if we include it here. -Erolos 17:03, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)
It is pronounced a difficult, as-is "Drizzt". In some of the books, rustic characters often pronounce his name as "Drizzit Dudden", and then Drizzt corrects them, telling them that it's "Drizzt Do'Urden".--JarlaxleArtemis 00:04, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Just to enlighten some, I've had several conversations with my Uncle, the creator of this particular character. "Drizzt" is pronounced "Dri-zzt". The Z's are pronounced as hard S's. Last name "Do'Urden" is pronounced "Do-ur-den". Fairly simple? Good. --Cap'n-- 66.112.132.19 0354, 01 Nov 2005 (UTC)

208.248.33.30 20:24, 23 January 2007 (UTC)I've played Demon Stone on my computer, the way the voice actors said it was like "Dr-its" One Syllable (All of them prounced it the same way)

What is the meaning of the name Drizzt Do'Urden? According to the Official Dragon Magazine, "Driz" means "Hard, Steel, unyielding" and the ending "-zt" means "Finder or Hunter". Do'Urden is the Family Clan name. "Do' " means "Walkers in" and "Urden" means "The Darkness".--Izzlyn 13:19, 11 Jan 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for that information. I've added it to the article. JarlaxleArtemis 03:52, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

hey, what language is that in, anyway?71.127.18.49 22:07, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

On page 54 of the Baldur's Gate II manual, it mentions his name is pronounced "Dritst Doe-UrR-den" and that's the most reliable source I've seen on how to pronounce it. The "zz" is probably supposed to be pronounce like the Italian "zz" which is pronounced like "ts". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.121.129.102 (talk) 23:05, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Merge

I have merged the content from the stub articles on the separate sub-series into this article, and I have changed those articles into redirects that point here. I have removed the links that this change converts into self-references. DES 29 June 2005 15:43 (UTC)

To Do

I have moved the following from an HTML comment in the article, to this talk page where it can more esily be seen and acted on by editors:

to be done - the events of the Icewind Dale Trilogy and beyond

Incorporate the following:

Twinkle, which he received before he helped Bruenor Battlehammer retake Mithral Hall, and the other is called Icingdeath which has an ice enchantment on it. He took it from the Dragon Icingdeath's hoarde after Wulfgar and he defeated it. speed enchanted bracers, which he took from Dantrag Baenre after beating him in mortal combat.

What about the newest series, "The Hunter's Blades Trilogy"?

Note I did not write any of the above, I just moved it here. DES 29 June 2005 19:29 (UTC)

Too many spoiler

Hey, this drizzt page is looking like a Drizzt story book! I believe in an encyclopedia most people would wish to see a shorter story, and to know other facts about him, know why he is so famous. And if they are truly interested, they can go get the novels. --Cynehelm 2 July 2005 19:25 (UTC)

I agree that there's too much info on one page, and the size is also at the allowed limit of 32kb - so I propose to move the detailed sections of each book series (Icewind Trilogy, and so on) out to their individual sites, and then link to them, perhaps making a S.A. Salvatore books category to glue them together. A few lines of 'overview', on the Drizzt page, for each series would be better for casual browsers. Poulsen 11:30, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Just do it then. I found that there are pages for Icewind Dale Trilogy, Dark Elf Trilogy, and with 90% si,similar content to this page. Did someone copied those from this page, or did someone copied those TO this page ?? In any case, Mr. Poulsen please do as you see fit.

I will. Poulsen 12:44, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

In fact, I'd remove most of the content in the "Literature" section unless there's relevant Drizzt-specific information, such as the fact that he was originally just a supporting character in the Icewind Dale Trilogy. --Deathphoenix 15:09, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

Bout time. Good job, as it should have been so long ago. --Cynehelm 17:14, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Drizzt's alignment

All sources I've read show Drizzt's alignment as Chaotic Good, yet 67.81.26.227 is changing it and saying that he is Lawful Good. Did a recent source book come right out and say he's now Lawful Good, or is this "original research"? --Deathphoenix 2 July 2005 14:40 (UTC)

I do think Drizzt is CG, that can be know from two Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting books. Mr. 67.81.26.227 please Cite your source, or leave it just at that. --Cynehelm 2 July 2005 19:23 (UTC)

I think his alignment should be left out. He's really a story character, not much of a role-playing character. Chaotic good is somewhat confusing, as in the books, Drizzt is very lawful. Jarlaxle July 2, 2005 21:31 (UTC)

I dunno. He's not above stealing things. That's pretty damn unlawful in my opinion. If He's listed as being CG he should be CG here too. hash

I've never seen his alignment listed, myself. There's an entry about him in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, which has lots of statistics about him, but unfortunately, no alignment. Jarlaxle 21:13, July 17, 2005 (UTC)

You've not been looking hard enough then. In between Spell resistance and his saving throw modifiers is his alignment it is listed as "CG" i.e. Chaotic Good hash

hash is right. Both the second and third edition versions of Drizzt's character, as published by TSR/WotC, give Drizzt's alignment as chaotic good. —Lowellian (reply) 07:44, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

You are wrong because drizzt is Lawful Good!!(Mr.Mondello) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 170.185.173.19 (talk) 17:15, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

To: JarlaxleArtemis RE: recent edits

ALL Drow have the power to conjure faerie fire, not just Drow nobles.—Hashimashadoo

Okay, thanks. I was under the impression that only magic-users and nobles could conjure faerie fire. Jarlaxle 00:00, July 16, 2005 (UTC)
I think you're thinking of levitation. --Deathphoenix 05:28, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

Menzoberranyr nobles all wear house insignias that allow them to levitate.—Hashimashadoo

From what I remember, no. Drizzt's house insignia (in his piwafwi) was destroyed in the sunlight, but he continued to levitate for a time, though this power steadily waned until it failed completely. The last time I remember him demonstrating this was in front of deBouchee (I could be mistaken, but that's irrelevant to this discussion). --Deathphoenix 19:28, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

In the fifth book of The War of the Spider Queen series, it is mentioned that faerie fire is an inherant ability only bred into drow nobles. Anointed Blade 02:08, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

That's not correct, and I bet that if you find the exact quote, you'll see that it doesn't actually say that. All drow can use faerie fire, but only nobles can levitate. The Monstrous Manual lists drow as having the ability to cast faerie fire, but not levitate. In Homeland, we have, in the section where Vierna is teaching Drizzt how to levitate: "...levitation was a high manifestation of innate drow magic, certainly more difficult than limning objects in faerie fire or summoning globes of darkness. The Do'Urden emblem heightened these innate powers of drow elves, magic that usually emerged as a drow matured. Whereas most drow nobles could summon the magical energy to levitate once every day or so...". Furthermore, we've seen drow battle groups and armies all use faerie fire, and certainly not all drow in those groups were all noble. Also, from the above quote, we see that the Do'Urden emblem only enhances the levitation ability; it does not itself grant it. —Lowellian (reply) 07:40, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Picture formatting

Can someone fix the formatting of the image at the top of the page so it doesn't push the intro text down below the picture, leaving large whitespace at the top? —Lowellian (reply) 07:45, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Just Fixed it :) Eirek 01:07, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

Where is the value in this article?

Is it just me, or is this article purely for promoting fake-sword merchandise and fifth-rate fiction? And what's with the language? "His handsome features are sharp and well proportioned, and like other drow, Drizzt's skin is jet black and his stark white hair is long, thick, and flowing."

Good grief. Hardly NPOV...whoever wrote that was clearly wrapped in a romantic obsession with a fictional character. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.91.173.75 (talkcontribs) .

I agree, with articles such as this it is difficult to create a meaningful article without people adding irrelevent and superfluous information. An out-of-universe perpective is required here, but to do so, in my opinion requires removal of a lot of information from this article. A lot of this article is pointless. Remember it is supposed to aid in the understanding of a fictional character, excessively detailed info is not helpful. -- Lewis 00:46, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
The author of Drizzt, R.A. Salvatore, pretty much describes Drizzt that way. Anyways, nobody is forcing you to read all the details. You could just skim through it if you want. (And no, I didn't add that flowing hair statement in there.) JarlaxleArtemis 02:55, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

I agree wth Jarlaxle Artemis. True fans of this character wouldn't want the excessive info to be chopped up. User:Koguryo

Maybe so, but this point of this article isnt a fan page, unfortunately, like many articles about this kind of subject too many people treat it as one. Its an encyclopedia article about a literary character and the intended readers are not fans, and it shouldnt be assumed they are. I will say though that there is plenty of useful and relevant stuff in this article, it just needs to be rewritten I think. -- Lewis 12:43, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
Nobody is forcing you to read all the details. You could just skim through it if you want. JarlaxleArtemis 19:43, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
I agree that this article indeed needs to be updated. But How ? Mr. Lewis can you propose something to go ? Cynehelm 14:43, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Yeah sure, well apart from the intro and the fan reactions section, and a couple of other minor places, the article treats Drizzt as if he were a real person. Wikipedia is supposed to have an out-of-universe perspective on fictional subjects. The best way to solve this is to find references.
The article needs to focus more on Drizzt as a character and his development and roles in the books, why is he popular, what dont people like (lot of that is the fan reactions bit already), with less focus on what magic items he carries and the intricate details of how he got them etc. Obviously a biography section is necessary and its hard to get an out of universe perpective there. I def think there needs to be a character development section.
The first thing I think we should do is reduce the magic items and weapons sections to a couple of paragraphs max and focus of their significance to Drizzt not on their individual powers or whatever. (maybe make separate articles if people cant stand to part with the them) -- Lewis 11:58, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Drow Elf?

isn't his race should be drow in the table? --Fsdemir 08:54, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Class

According to WOTC http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/fx20010117d his class is Fighter/Ranger/Barbarian --Fsdemir 12:19, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

That is for use in the role-playing games; the games are mere trivia. JarlaxleArtemis 04:41, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Still,it is a D&D character infobox and we should stick with the official material. You can see some barbarian aspects (like his rage) in the novels too --Fsdemir 16:25, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Edit (third person who doesnt know how to use wikipedia, me, wants to say something): Was it really the order of the stick that told about the many drizzt do urden copies? i seem to remember it was goblins.. read here :" http://thunt.comicgen.com/d/20050709.html " sorry for bad edit.

I don't understand what you're trying to say, but that comic page is pretty funny. JarlaxleArtemis 21:23, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

The 3rd Edition of FG says 10 Fighter/1 Barbarian/5 Ranger.

Statistics

has anyone ever thought about including the stats (STR DEX CON, etc) on Wikipedia articles about AD&D characters? That would be pretty cool. --Quigonpaj 14:37, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Upcoming Books?

Does anyone here actually read the books and if so do any of you have any idea what RA Salvatore is writing now that hes finished Road of the Patriarch. Will there be another book after the two swords? --Drizzt Jamo 22:00, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

He will return to Drizzt after the sellswords.there are loose ends after two swords.he has said it in an interview too with its date but i can't find it right now

Why did you take my swords?

Hey whats with the deletion of the swords. They're the real life repliques. Jamo

They are just regular swords, and some guy named them Twinkle and Icingdeath to make money. JarlaxleArtemis 05:48, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I found them on ebay and someone forged them to be repliques. I know the guy who made them. Jamo 06:55, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

They advertise for them in the back of my friend's copy of the lone drow. Mwsilvabreen 23:35, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Biography section is a mess

while it was suppose to give a summary of drizzt, look at what we have here...

the first five paragraphes are about his time in the underdark/drow city.

Thoughtful and sensitive to others....then suddenly the next talked about his personality, which has already been detailed in earlier section?

Early in his surface travels, Alustriel Silverhand welcomed him....made Drizzt Do'Urden more welcome in the Sword Coast North.....i fail to see the point of this.

Thrice in his life, Drizzt had regressed into a bestial and instinctive state of mind in which he was identified as the Hunter...what a bumbling, and in the wrong place. this should be in the combat section, not Biography.

As a dark elf, Drizzt is innately able to summon globes of darkness at..., this should not even appear in Drizzt article, but in drow article or in faerie fire instead. These abilities are not available to Drizzt only. AND CERTAINLY NOT IN THE BIOGRAPHY SECTION.

"Driz" means "hard, steel, or unyielding," or "dawn", and ... This should be listed ahead, not here either.

I propose a rewrite of this Bio section. But then again, the story of Drizzt is quire long. If anyone, please do it in a summarized manner.

Outrage

I'd like to know why Drizzt is Classified as part Barbarian in the bio box thing??? Jamo 04:53, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

It IS official, dude. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/fx20010117d --Cynehelm 04:59, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Read "Exile" and you'll know why... it's key to who is he is and what he becomes... -anon May 21st 2007 (UTC)

Drizzt Favoured/Chosen by Deity?

Was wondering about this since Drizzt was able to go toe-to-toe with the Chosen of the Orcish Deity.(It would explain some miraculous luck) The Drow in the book wondered if it was Lloth herself that might favour him since she is a creature of Chaos and so is he. (Just read Starless Night and you get an idea, even Jarlaxle exclaims it) Since the Spider Queen War books were released though it seems this is unlikely.... thoughts? Kau-12 14:26, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I think unless this fact is claimed in some official setting books or official novels, WHAT we think here is not important.
You can put it in the fan reaction, though.
Uh... it was theorised on in the Hunters Trilogy if I remember correctly... so it is somewhat backed by the official novel. Kau-12 01:46, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
By those exiled drow ?? I am not under the impression that their mere talk is the established truth.
Well if Salvatore is willing to have some characters in the book consider it, I would have assumed that he himself had considered it, whether he is favoured by any deity or not.
Your point in this reply is not clear to me.
Well if Salvatore is willing to have some characters in the book consider it, I would have assumed that he himself had
considered it, whether he is favoured by any deity or not
This refers to the out-universe facts of R. A. Salvatore's writing style, not the in-universe fact that proves Drizzt is a Chosen of Lloth.. It is a encyclopedia we are trying to run here, not a fan-site thread or idle chat. 15:05, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Right. House Beanre though Jarlaxle was a chosen too, right? But he ended up just being protected by a psionic barrier. A chosen pretty much has to have in mind his/her deity's wants whenever he/she acts, and Drizzt doesn't exactly go around killing people who disappoint him, right? Mwsilvabreen 21:42, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

True, but I have had the thought he may be the chosen of Mielikki. I assumed that Montolio was, but with him dead...

Agreed, that is what I would have thought. Or otherwise, has some insanely good dice rolls.Trekkiexb5 23:20, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

rv weapon

With all due respect, detailed introduction concerning Drizzt's scimitars should be in their own respective pages.

Why? There's so little info., we should just put them under Drizzt's page. Mwsilvabreen 23:34, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
