Both are neutral as to the justice of a drumhead court martial. I think that the tone of the encyclopedia article should be the same or at least acknowledge that while in haste, such a court does not have to be inherently unfair. TMLutas 03:44, 14 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The term seems to be used neutrally in Herman Melville's Billy Budd. The point of such a trial is illustrated in that work: Fairness to the organization above fairness to the individual. Also, in that usage, it is similar to the modern military terms "non-judicial punishment" and "summary court martial."

Today?

It would be interesting to hear about the legal status of this kind of court-martial today? Are they still part of the military code of justice? -- DevSolar (talk) 12:55, 4 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Colloquialism

edit

In every instance I've ever heard the phrase "drumhead" used in reference to a trial, it's been much more of a reference to its usage in Star Trek, which is something of a euphemism for a "kangaroo court", or a "show trial" of sorts with a clear miscarriage of due process and complete lack of consideration for justice, and all by design: the kind of "trial" you would expect after a proverbial "witch hunt".

Does anybody else have experience with the colloquial usage of the phrase "drumhead trial"? Does anybody know of any "reliable sources" that can verify this usage? Its evolution seems to be best described here, though I'll admit this is probably NOT a "reliable source", and I'm including it here only because it does a good job explaining what I'm talking about so the "talk" can understand.

FWIW "The Free Dictionary" just redirects to "Kangaroo Court": https://www.thefreedictionary.com/Drumhead+trial 24.151.103.37 (talk) 19:25, 9 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

The drumhead court-martial of the Finnish 15th Brigade in July 1944

This image is not an image of a drumhead-court martial. The picure is in the fi:Kenttäoikeus which is not about drumhead court martials, but about field court-martials. Another Wikidata screw up. Creuzbourg (talk) 21:01, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
