Duchy of Głogów → Duchy of Glogau — According to WP:NCGN the widely accepted historical English name should be used, and the name should reflect cultural or political dominance. The cultural and political dominance was German, since the local society was Germanized during the Ostsiedlung in the 13th and 14th century. Google Books, restricted to English, gives these results:

• "Duchy of Głogów" 10 hits [1]
• "Duke of Głogów" 40 hit [2]

Total: 50

• "Duchy of Glogau" 287 hits [3]
• "Duke of Glogau" 165 hits [4]

Against, see Talk:Duchy of Legnica. Duchy of Głogów - 122 000 ghits, Duchy of Glogau - 37 700 ghits. So clearly, dominantly in English is used Głogów, not Glogau. Encyclopædia Britannica uses Glogow too (see article about Sigismund I, where is "Sigismund I, the fifth son of Casimir IV and Elizabeth of Habsburg, had ruled Głogów, Silesia, since 1499 and became margrave of Lusatia and governor of all Silesia in 1504.")--Yopie (talk) 11:15, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

1. WP:NCGN doesn't ask for a random Google search but for Google Scholar and Google Books, i.e. scholarly sources. And Encyclopædia Britannica is only one of many sources.

• No, no, WP:NCGN says, that "Consult English-language encyclopedias (we recommend Encyclopedia Britannica,.." as first option, thus if EB uses Glogow, then we must use Glogow. Others options are for use only if first option fails. --Yopie (talk) 22:12, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Maybe you should read WP:NCGN again: "Without such an assertion, the following methods (not listed in any particular order)..." And it also states: "Consult English-language encyclopedias", not to consult a single encyclopedia. And: "If the articles in these agree on using a single name in discussing the period, it is the widely accepted English name."

If all encyclopedias use the same name we have to follow their example. The problem here: we don't have access to all English-language encyclopedias. Wiki recommends a few, but there are more encyclopedias. That's why we have to check other sources too, like Google Books or Scholar. And these sources aren't our second option but are equally good, as WP:NCGN clearly states. And the results in Google Books are clear. The name Glogau in conjunction with duchy or duke appears almost 10x more often in these sources. Karasek (talk) 06:44, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

• Oppose - pretty much ALL those hits for "Glogau" are from ... the 19th century - the only one that's from 2006 is actually a reprint of a 1898 source. Modern sources use "Duchy of Glogow", [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] which is probably why Britannica also uses Duchy of Glogow".Volunteer Marek (talk) 08:48, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
