Abbreviate to IRA or PIRA

In line with ALL other articles in wiki the Provisional Irish Republican Army should be abbreviated to IRA and not to PIRA as there is no mention of the original IRA in the article.--Vintagekits 00:48, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

I disagree. If you read the current version of our article on the Provisional Irish Republican Army at

you will see that the abbreviation PIRA is accurate, although many shorten this to the IRA, the Provos, "the Army" or the "'RA".

Just because folks are sloppy, lazy and sometimes misleading does not mean our encyclopedia should be too. Most folks I know (incorrectly) term a "ballpoint pen" a BIRO. Not all ballpoint pens are BIRO's and not all splinter groups or political sects are the Irish Republican Army. It's necessary when talking about terrorist groups to precisely identify the perpetrator when that has been established by confession or judicial process...Gaimhreadhan^{(kiwiexile at DMOZ)} • 01:01, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

This is not the place to soapbox and by labelling the group are terrorist then you are not helping coming keeping this a civil discussion. We at wiki do not trailblaze, the common abriviation in IRA not PIRA, PIRA is only used to differenciate when more than one form of ONahE is being discussed - which isnt the case here. Even the link you show contradicts your argument when its states "PIRA; more commonly referred to as the IRA".--Vintagekits 01:07, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

This has been argued out previously, and at great length, and the decision, consistently, was to abbreviate as IRA unless one was referring to Continuity IRA, Real IRA, or Official IRA. The Provisionals are always called simply IRA. You have simply decided to make an issue of it here and now in order to make a POINT.
