Locations nearby
editI like the idea of the locations nearby, but do wonder how to best format it so that it doesn't become a lengthy list. How is a location determined to be WP:NOTE? Kramerbooks is mentioned, but not Melody Records? The Electronic Privacy Information Center also has an office nearby and in some circles they are more significant than Brookings. In terms of eating locations, there are nearly a dozen Starbucks, two Così (restaurant)s, a Five Guys, a Teaism and a bazillion other sites. Where do we stop? --Autopilot (talk) 03:27, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- Five Guys, mmmmm. Loves it. Some ideas for determining which notable places should be mentioned: 1)Only mention businesses/organizations that are within a 3 block radius, 2)Don't include small stores and restaurants, 3)Pick a number, as in people agree that no more than number places should be mentioned, 4)Remove the list and don't worry about it. 5) I'm still thinking... APK is like a firecracker. He makes it hot. 05:10, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- I would go with #4 here, and remove the list and not worry about it. SchuminWeb (Talk) 06:03, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Accuracy of reproduction of poetry
editLooking at the quotes stanza of Walt Whitman's poetry I cannot help but wonder how accurate it is. Is the hyphen correct, or is there an em dash there instead. Logic would make me think so, but the only time that I visited DuPont Circle, in 1984, I forgot what I saw. The other question that strikes me is the ellipsis at the end of the quoted matter. Is it there at the end of the line too?
The bits I want to have quoted correctly are—
- I sit by the restless all dark night - some are so young;
- Some suffer so much - I recall the experience sweet and sad...
Can we get this fixed soon?59.100.21.85 (talk) 07:10, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
- The whole thing is engraved on one line around the opening (added in 2007), and the ellipsis does exist at the end of the line. The hyphen/dash matter, that's probably supposed to be a dash, but the hyphen is on the keyboard, so someone substituted, I suppose. SchuminWeb (Talk) 14:31, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks SchuminWeb, that's a great description of the stanza as represented! Brilliant. But I do see in the first photo that there is also a comma before the ellipses. And comparing the text in my book with the photo at your second reference it looks like the mason took some liberties with the shortness of the dash/hyphen. So I'll leave that alone. Thanks for the photos. They make it so much easier to get editing right. Lin (talk) 06:37, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
