Clean Up

I just removed the personal anecdote stuff recently added. We certainly don't need personal anecdotes and first-person narratives in Wikipedia. If someone wants to confirm the relevant info and add ONLY that (or clean up the info and source it correctly within the article), that's possibly acceptible, but as it is this is just an unnecessary and distracting personal anecdotal quote from a family genealogy book. --Softlavender

It's not so important, as the Wiktionary user gets redirected here. What's more concerning is the exclusion of the term from the page Pages where Dutch is mentioned in the title. It remains a definition, or part of a definition, tho.86.31.105.33 (talk) 17:01, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

'Strict' or useless?

The article, as it stands, seems to place to much emphasis on the joint assumptions that a 'Dutch uncle' = a strict uncle, and that a 'normal uncle' is 'avuncular' or agreeable(!). As can be gleaned from an overview of the article, 'Dutch' is used, in this type of context, in a broadly derogatory way, therefore arguably suggesting a useless, unwanted or dud uncle - at the very worst, a euphemistic way of describing someone adopting an avuncular role, but not doing the child, or whoever, a lot of good (and possible harm: i.e., = a suspected paedophile). It therefore serves as a salutary warning re Dutch 'innovations' which frequently turn out to be neither truly innovative nor effective (see shared space. 86.31.105.33 (talk) 17:07, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

Phrases

A fair few of the phrases don't entirely ring true to me. Can we have sources, please. For example, Dutch cap is unlikely to be from the 17th century - not impossible, but I'd like to see some evidence for it. - Sitush (talk) 11:09, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

According the the OED, Dutch cap in the sense of a diaphragm is recorded in 1922. My bet is the name comes from the shape (cf: the traditional Dutch female headwear) and has nothing to do with wars in the 17th century. - Sitush (talk) 11:57, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

My Dutch Uncles

I am a sixth generation native born Pennsylvanian of Bayerische and Irish ancestry. I remember many Dutch Uncles when I was a child. Some were actual uncles, others were family friends and neighbors. Some are still living. These were men who would school us kids frequently with on-the-spot corrections. Their admonishments, counsel and reprimands etc were stern but not cruel. Their counsel was always wise and practical and benefits me to this day. The term was never derisive as I recall and I remember my Dutch Uncles fondly. Tjlynnjr (talk) 17:44, 21 May 2014 (UTC) .

Dutch wife

In this article it says that Dutch wife (sex doll/prostitute) comes from the Anglo-Dutch war but if you look at the Dutch wife article it is said that the term originates from the Dutch selling early sex dolls to the Japanese.
