Open or proprietary?
editECW is described as 'open standard'. As far as I know ECW is a proprietary standard. The format specification does not seem to be publicly available. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.72.178.202 (talk) 05:34, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- Just looked long and hard for the file format or code, and found neither. There is a free library to compress images up to 500 MBytes in size, but it is provided only in binary form. Looks to me like ECW is proprietary. I will change the article accordingly. HairyWombat (talk) 18:50, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- Found and downloaded the source code, but you are granted the rights for evaluation purposes only. For other purposes you are required to pay royalties if the encoding capability is greater than 500 MBytes. HairyWombat (talk) 20:37, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- ermapper.com and erdas.com are no longer reachable.... It seems version 2 is open sources and SDK 4 and 5 are licensed. FoxyPinkSound (talk) 14:58, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
XnView
editXnView - Image viewer: looks promising, but XnView web page listing 400 file formats have icon at .ecw format, informing that .ecw is available for Windows only (and requires apprently plugin)121.44.241.237 (talk) 09:08, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Earth Resource Mapping, Inc/Ltd
editI suppose this is the name of the company that created and sort-of controls this standard. It's small (5-10 people?) based in Perth (Australia). It's sometimes labeled "Inc" and sometimes "Ltd". And sometimes it's called erdas or ermapper (they owns domains erdas.com and ermapper.com)
And apparently it was bought by the Swiss camera company Leica Geosystems so maybe all those other names don't matter. Here's some links:

This is all just google-trolling info -- I'm not an insider. Anyone who actually knows what's going on should probably edit the main page. The world wants to know.
