Minus notation

The notation, for example, 6-, means "six minus", which means "less than six years". I wonder why this is used a multitude of times, such as in 7-, 8-, 9-, 10-, and so forth. Why is is that someone always worked less than a certain number of years? Note that a mathematician wrote this.

...Mathematician hey... -6 != 6-, what school did you go to? It's pretty common notation in encyclopedias to use this format, such as in biographies of living people where their birth dates would be written "b. 19xx-". Although putting "7-present" or "7-current season" would be more clear, I understood what it meant. This is the dumbest complaint I've ever seen. -—Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.84.58.134 (talkcontribs)

While #– is not familiar to me for less than, I am familiar with 6+ meaning six-or-more, so its no stretch to see how one could interpret 6– as six-or-less. Regardless, when one uses dashes for ranges, the en dash should be used for a closed range (1986–1992), and an em dash should be used for an open range (1982—). This could be because an en dash looks just like a minus sign.—MJBurrageTALK05:42, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Susan Lewis left for Phoenix or Flagstaff?

I recall hearing Dr. Lewis in an episode say that she had been working in Flagstaff, Arizona after her return to the series (not Phoenix as the person who reverted my edit believes.) She said something about the heat being depressing etc and that she has been working in Flagstaff. Can someone confirm/reject this? I won't reedit the article until i get some sort of confirmation. Summoned 00:51, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm the person who reverted your edits. I have "No Brain, No Gain" on tape, and in it she tells Mark, after he confronts her about dating Morgenstern, that she was never dating him, but rather had been meeting with him to get his help in securing a job for her in Phoenix. Also, in "Union Station" she takes a train to Phoenix, not Flagstaff. One last thing—you might want to move this to the bottom of the page. That's where new discussions go (see guidelines at the top of this page). 24.21.87.178 01:02, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Jump The Shark

For a show running 12 years, this article seems just a bit more than a stub. I expected more, but I'm not a fan of the show (well, former fan, I only watched it for three seasons). It would seem to me that this show has jumped the shark, however it is difficult to choose the precise moment because this show seems to have exercised every "jumped" category. --malber 15:21, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Jump the Shark.com has Doug Ross leaving as the most popular Jump moment. For me it started losing it earlier than that in the start of season 4 when Mark Greene's beating lead him to become a jerk. Mark having a relationship, then marriage, to Corday never worked for me either. Then Carol left. So I guess I'd put it, for me, from eason four to the start of 7 except I did like some episodes after that. (After they switched the actress, and personality, of Greene's daughter it pretty much had nothing left to interest me. My vieing of the show was a tad Greene-centric as initially he was my favorite character. Watching how they screwed him up is also notable to me in the decline) Anyway it's kind of a shame because in its first three seasons it was maybe my favorite show. In seasons 4-7 it was still kind of good. In the last 2 or 3 seasons it's been mostly bad, although I appreciate their effort to get interest in the Congolese situation.

A problem with my comments is personal events effected my viewing of this show. I was in the ICU in late 1997 for respiratory failure and after that I never enjoyed it as much. All the doctors talked about it a great deal in the ICU and for awhile it kind of reminded me of things I moved on from.--T. Anthony 11:03, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

People misuse the term "jump the shark." They seem to use it as a synonym for "this is when I stopped liking the show," or "this is when the show started to suck"---but that is not what the phrase means. It denotes a moment when the show did something so horrendous and previously unthinkable that the entire atmosphere suddenly changes. Has ER slipped?---certainly. Has it "jumped the shark"?---no. --Charles 05:32, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
I would have to say it "jumped the shark" with Dr. Romano and the helicopter. Gnosbush 17:16, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
i dont know what you guys are talking about. the first 8 or 9 seasons are unbearably soap opera-ish. the 10th and later seasons have much better writing and humor.

i would say it jump the shark 3 times... when dough ross left thats the first then the second is when dr. greene left and the 3rd is when dr.carter left..

Other long-serving (4+ years) regular cast not credited as stars

There are a lot of red links in this section. This section is questionable because the individuals listed are not particularly noteworthy. The few edits I see to this article each week involve this section. It's also getting a bit lengthy. Are we going to start listing every extra that's ever appeared on an episode of ER? --malber 12:34, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

I think it's good that all of the characters that lasted more than 4 years without credit be mentioned... not every guest star has any need of being listed, but important characters are still good... Emily 02:13, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

First Member to Leave Cast

In the article, it states that George Clooney was the first original cast member to be moved, however I beg to move that this be changed to Sherry Stringfield, despite the fact that she later returned. Maria Bello also left before Clooney. Cameronian 20:12, 11 February 2006 (UTC) Maria Bello was not an original cast member (didn't start until 3rd season) however Sherry Stringfield DID leave before George Clooney.

Sorry, should have been more clear, I had only meant that Maria had been a regular cast member, not that she was an original.

Movie?

Wasn't the series based on a movie with the same actors/actresses playing the same people as they play in the series? I could have sworn that I read somewhere that this "movie" did so well that a series was made from it? Flyerhell 02:37, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, there was a pilot episode, and it certainly had some differences from the series, but AFAIK, it was always intended to be a series, and wasn't just a movie later made into a TV show, like say Buffy. Ok, Buffy's a bad example, since the production was very different, but it's the best I can think of. Maybe Michael Crichton intended to sell it as a movie script or something. I can't recall, but I have a book on ER around here. I'll see if I can dig it up and find out. FrozenPurpleCube 03:53, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

The most successful film-turned-TV-show I can think of is M*A*S*H. The Altman film and the TV series were a great deal different, to the point that there is a large number of people who liked one and almost hated the other. (In both directions, liking the series and hating the film or liking the film and hating the series) Although Gary Burghoff was in both as Radar O'Reilly.--T. Anthony 11:10, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

You are right, Mr. Manticore, it was originally scripted as a movie, and it was decided that it should turn in to a series before it was actually filmed. The pilot is in fact feature length (IIRC around 2 hours). Hope this helps. Cameronian 20:12, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

1st episode

Was the first episode 2 hours long, or did two episodes air in a row? Because I can see here where the most recent update, saying that from the second episode on, as opposed to the third, Nurse Carol Hathaway was added to the full-time cast. Oh- I just looked on tv.com, and it seems that the first episode, "24 Hours", was 2 hours long. Well, I'll post this anyway, in case anyone else os confused... Emily 00:29, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

The first episode was 2 hours long (with commercials). On subsequent airings and in syndication, it is presented as Pilot, parts I and II 04:15, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Please use references

"Other notable episodes" -- needs explanation

In the "other notable episodes" section, several episode titles are listed with no explanation. Why are they notable? PxT 21:47, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

I also wonder, why are they notable? Perhaps some of them deal with current events? Hyacinth 04:02, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Since the section has a link to a complete listing of ER episodes, I am sure that reasons for their notability can be found there. I know that episode featuring James Woods as an ALS patient was hyped greatly by NBC, and for very good reason; his was a remarkable performance. I am sure other episodes cited as "notable" also have such compelling reasons. -- Jalabi99 14:12, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
I agree that there's a problem here. Having a guest star doesn't make an episode "stand out", nor does having a main character leave- otherwise there would be dozens of "stand out" episodes. I'm going to pare it down to 1. "love's labor lost"- an episode that won an emmy, and 2. "hell and high water"- an episode that got the highest nielsen rating ever by an ER episode. johnpseudo 18:21, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Merge?

I have proposed a merger of the page Mental Illness in ER into this article. The other article reads as an opinion piece. If nothing is worth saving from the other article, then I suggest making it into a redirect. —MiraLuka 07:00, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I do not believe that they should be merged, and I do not believe that there is anything salvagable in that article. It is total POV, using ER as an example in order to attack the media's handling of mental health issues, especially schizophrenia. Now, I am not arguing that the author of the article is incorrect, but the point is moot---Wikipedia is not the place for such an argument.--Charles 07:05, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
Delete it. It is totally POV. Like Charles, I'm not saying that it doesn't have a point, but there is no place for it on Wikipedia. --John24601 08:12, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Hallee Hirsh

I think she acted as Rachel Greene in some important episodes like "On The Beach". Can't she be considered as a supporting cast of past?

Deletion of discussion "stupid writing"

It angers me that the anonymous user at IP address 72.230.9.33 deleted the discussion at the top of the page entitled "stupid writing." I voiced my objection to the comments originally made, but a discussion had ensued between myself and the original poster as to the purpose of the talk page, and that discussion had merit. No one should ever delete a discussion on the talk page without permission, or without discussion---that's why it's called the talk page. --Charles 04:55, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Opening paragraphs

The opening paragraphs of this article seem too long to me. There is a lot of information in those paragraphs that could (and should) be dealt with in the main body of the article, and in some cases the information is repetitive. The introduction really does not need to be so long and ponderous, does it? Any thoughts? --Charles 04:38, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Cast departures

I like the new "cast departures" section, but what do you think of making it a subsection of the "cast" section? ---Charles 04:45, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Error In Trivia Section

A bulleted note in the Trivia section states, "ER is loosely based on writer Elizabeth Hunter's time spent in Seattle's Harborview Medical Hospital as a registered nurse.[citation needed]."

This is a widely perpetuated, yet totally false, assumption. The show is based upon Executive Producer Michael Crichton's experiences in medical school, and, specifically, his work of non-fiction, Five Patients, (published in 1970 by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.) A great deal of the pilot episode of "ER" was taken directly from the book. The book (and, ultimately the series "ER") is based upon the experiences of a fourth-year medical student (author Michael Crichton) at Massachusetts General Hospital in the 1960's. The premise was, of course, updated for television in the 1990's and beyond.

Please correct this error. For further information and verification, you can check Crichton's official website (http://www.crichton-official.com/).

Massive revert alert

Some anonymous user came in and reexpanded the trivia section which I had taken a lot of time to pare down to a managable 5 or 6 entries. It looks like this anonymous user feels the need for a horrendously large trivia section. Currently there is a policy discussion about the removal of trivial sections of articles in toto, and while I am generally a trivia buff, I can see the need to incorporate a lot of similar trivia into the main article text when there is enough that is alike. Now, I would like to do a massive revert of this article back to where I had it before with almost no trivia, and the trivial information distributed within the article. Does anyone object to this move? Also, I will correct any other errors that cropped up when I did the trivia clean-out.
Lady Aleena talk/contribs 04:58, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

I am that anonymous user, and the reason I reverted so many of your changes is because you incorporated a ton of material into sections where it didn't appear to fit in well. For example, you included many trivia items about how an actor was recruited for the show, or what episodes they directed, into the cast departures section. I just don't think that is the proper place for all sorts of non-departure information. I do not "feel the need for a horrendously large trivia section." I simply didn't agree with the way you re-fitted so many items into the existing sections. Perhaps more thoughful editing and paring down of the trivia section is warranted, and I'd be happy to help with that. 24.21.87.178 18:30, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Rating Chart

Can someone possibly make a Neilson rating chart for this article? Flyerhell 21:13, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

County General or Cook-County General?

Although the article states that the name of the hospital is County General, in Episode 4 Noah Wyle calls it "Cook County General Hospital" when he is calling to report the news of a kid's death.

The time code is exactly 28 minutes if you have the DVD season set.

--Borisborf 18:43, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

It is also called "Cook County General Hospital" in Episode 10 at 16:03. --Borisborf 16:57, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

I think those are some odd exceptions, possibly even goofs. The vast, vast majority of the time it is refered to simply as County General. That's also the name used on the "official" NBC site (http://www.nbc.com/ER/about/) as well as the Warner Bros. site. 24.21.87.178 04:44, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Is it not the case that the full name is "Cook County General", but because the entire series and characters are set in Cook County, there is no need to qualify the "County General" with "Cook"? --John24601 06:30, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

If you pay attention to the episodes later on in the show, like signs on doors and and windows they all say CGH aka County General Hospital. Mike41691 (talk) 02:43, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Jumping the gun

I don't think Stamos should be added to the main cast section until after he appears in the main cast credits; that is, in September, after his first episode has aired. Same for characters listed in the Supporting cast list; the qualifier is "played supporting roles for three or more seasons," and I think that should be honored. Actors should not be added until their third season of appearing on the show begins. What do you think? 24.21.87.178 18:24, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

The show is in transition of seasons and Season 12 already finished. There is official information about the new season and we don`t need to hold up the information. John Stamos has already joined the cast (since the season started to be shot) and Leland Orser has been on the show for three seasons already. Rockdolly 19:02, 21 July 2006

Okay, I can see the Stamos argument (though I don't share the opinion), but Orser has not been on for three seasons. His first episode was in season 11 ("Try Carter"), and though we can obviously assume he will be on the show during season 13, there is no "official" info out about that (unlike Stamos). Given that, I think Orser shouldn't be added to the Supporting cast list. He's on the Notable guest stars list already, and will be added to the Supporting cast list in just a few months. What's the hurry? 24.21.87.178 19:04, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Scott Grimes

I have speculation Scott Grimes will NOT return as Dr. Archie Morris this season. I believe in the episode "21 Guns" he was shown making a video saying goodbye to everyone as he was transferring to a pharmuesutical company. I never liked him anyway. Whats evryone else think?

That's correct, he was leaving, and making the video as you described. I don't know if he will be returning for any of the upcoming season. Unless it can be confirmed, we should leave it until the new season starts to see if he's in there.

I realize that we should leave it there, but I was just wondering if anyone else had heard of confirmation and what their thoughts were.

Gotcha. It looks like he left, but I haven't confirmed it. Apologies for not signing my previos post ("That's correct, he was...). CPitt76 18:02, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

12 original episodes

i don't get that. 12 eps in decemeber will they be all new or older episodes/seasons?

Nielsen ratings for ER

Does anybody have got sources for ER's Nielsen ratings in the first five seasons? I mean the average numbers of people who watched ER during these seasons. I have got these numbers for the seasons 6-12, but not for the first five seasons. (I'm not interested in the household ratings or the shares.) With these numbers it would be nice to make a table for having a good overview over the show's audience success. --88.73.234.237 13:27, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Clemente

Why is there no mention of Dr. Victor Clemente (John Leguizamo) - I have only just started watching ER (but we're back a few series here in NZ) but he is one of the main characters? (and funniest ones too) -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 23:27, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Nope...he is a recurring character...he would be under guest starring roles under the main article. He is not mentioned of the ER page because he has only been on for 1 season. According to a recent spoiler he committs suicide early on in season 13. Hope that answers your question. Erfanatic 21:26, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks but no thanks. This answers my question but will completely wreck my enjoyment of the show! Why did you have to include the spoiler? (although I'm kinda not surprised... he seems a little bit too much edgy) -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 22:02, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Sorry that I may have ruined things for you, but please do not revert what i write. Erfanatic 04:19, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

That's the problem with including unlabeled spoilers in your post—you can really affect someone's experience of the show without giving them a chance to avoid the spoiler. In addition, the likelihood is that your info is completely wrong. Most spoiler sites are notoriously unreliable. In this case, it was a completely false spoiler. Here we are past mid-season and there has been no sign of Clemente at all. 24.22.90.40 18:05, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Trivia Section

Ok...under trivia it says that opening credits were cut from 50 seconds to 5 seconds. Ok yes it was but since the episode length was extremely long it might have been on purpose, and John Stamos was not in this episode so instead of leaving him out they probably will wait until next week to show him in the credits. Also in past season premieres because of their length the opening credits have been left out. I am going to revert this until we see episode 13.02. Erfanatic 21:56, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

It still was cut to 5 seconds in 13.02. Raven6247 02:15, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Can someone give a citation for the stated reason for cutting down the opening credits from 50 seconds to just five? I wonder how much exposition can take place in less than a minute, so the stated reason for the credits' length being cut doesn't hold water for me. -- Jalabi99 14:10, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
I've added a reference to a blog post by the execute producer (David Zabel) explaining the reason. I hope this is up to Wikipedia standards, and if it's not, please fix it, thanks! Jayden54 15:30, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

This article needs serious work

I don't really know where to start, for a show as long running and famous as ER, this article is quite sad. I'm a new convert to this show and I came here to read about the past history of some of the characters and plots. Lost has a detailed episode guide for every single show, here the plot details don't even mention how famous people like Jon Leguiziamo or Kristen Johnston were on the show, nevermind how long, or their impact. I can't write this because I don't know the past history. The last plot update in the

  • Episodes section - How bout a plot summary? The live episode tidbit probably belongs under the trivia section and the notable episodes list could go under the awards section.
  • In the episode I just watched on rerun, Eve got fired and abby tells kovac she is pregnant... this isn't even mentioned in the episode guide! These summaries are obviously ripped of from the dvd or tv guides and don't really detail what happened for people who want to know, which is presumably why people would be reading this section.
  • "Julianna Margulies guest starred in the pilot as Nurse Carol Hathaway and then became part of the regular cast." I would think that if they were in episode 1, and also episodes 2-200, they weren't really a guest in the pilot so much as cast.

--The "guest star" reference might have been an allusion to the fact that originally, Margulies was not intended to be a member of the regular cast, and her character was intended to pass away, rather than survive, her suicide attempt. When the show was picked up, the producers decided to revive her character, and she was added to the regular cast (all this according to the episode's DVD commentary). But it is confusing how it appears.Kevinmurphy02 15:06, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

  • "Note: Each U.S. network television season starts in late September and ends in late May, which coincides with the completion of May sweeps. All times mentioned in this section were in the Eastern & Pacific time zones." What times? The dates?
  • DVD release dates? How is this important?

Clooney's cameo

I removed the following trivia note from the main article because it has been unverified and without any citation of any sort for many, many months. I seem to recall an article way back that addressed the issue of Clooney's cameo in "Such Sweet Sorrow," and I will attempt to dig it up and replace the note I removed with one that can be cited properly.

  • REMOVED: Warner Brothers, the studio which produces ER for NBC, kept George Clooney's cameo in "Such Sweet Sorrow" a secret from NBC, which promoted the episode as Carol Hathaway's goodbye with no mention of Doug Ross's appearance. In fact, the original episode of "Such Sweet Sorrow" that Warner Brothers sent to NBC ended right after the scene where we see Hathaway on the plane to Seattle. At the eleventh hour, Warner Brothers messengered an "edited" version of the episode to NBC headquarters in New York for broadcast, and NBC had no time to preview it prior to airing it on the east coast. It turned out to be the extended episode that included Clooney's cameo. NBC was miffed that it was kept in the dark, as it lost valuable advertisement revenue it could have generated had they aired promos announcing the return of George Clooney. Clooney cited the fans of the show for his reason as to why he agreed to make the cameo (he wanted Hathaway and Ross's characters to get back together, as most fans always had hoped for). Clooney reportedly asked to be paid only scale for the cameo. The portion of the episode involving Clooney was filmed on location at the Perfect Storm movie set which Clooney was filming at the time.[citation needed]

I propose the season EIGHT cast picture be removed or at least be named correctly and the one of Benton and Carter performing surgery also be removed- Both pictures are irrelevant seeing many members of Season 8 have left the show as well as Benton and Carter and to add to that Carter switched to ER Med in season 3 so that makes the pictures even more irrelevant. 66.30.150.201 21:24, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

I completely agree, especially since the cast picture is now in there twice. 24.22.90.40 17:22, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Memorable episodes list

I removed the paragraph that listed the memorable episodes because it continually became a battlefield for certain individuals to list their personal favorites. I tried to preserve some kind of objective criteria for the episodes listed by narrowing them down to those that had earned Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Direction, Writing, or Single-Camera Picture Editing, but to no avail—it kept getting edited so that people could "customize" the list with the episodes that they thought were the best. One user, 141.217.228.199, went so far as to include a line at the end of the paragraph that said "Leave Episode List as is" (sic). Anyway, I thought I would open this up for debate: should the paragraph be included, and if so, how do we prevent the constant additions/deletions that reflect individual personal favorites? My vote is to leave the list out all together... 24.22.90.40 04:59, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I loved that list. The way I remember ER from when the show was great (I stopped watching after all of the original cast members, save for Noah Wyle, left), is through its classic episodes, many of it were written by Neal Baer. Put 'er back in! How do we avoid edit wars? Impossible. It wouldn't be Wikipedia without them. 71.249.54.58 08:22, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Why is Clemente listed with the main characters?

John Leguizamo was a recurring guest star in 12 episodes, not a main cast member. Why is his character listed among the main characters? Jerkov 15:57, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

If you're talking about the navigation box in the bottom of the article, then you're right, and I've removed him from there. Jayden54 17:14, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Leguizamo

He isn't even in the article —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.33.62.60 (talk) 07:43, 8 April 2007 (UTC).

Music

Is a list of every song to ever be featured on ER necessary? Soojmagooj 18:55, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Definitely not. I've removed the whole thing. - LeonWhite 00:39, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
Definitely YES! I was looking for a certain song played at the end of a certain episode. A list about every song played in ER would be just great! Please restore and continue the music list! An encyclopedia like Wikipedia should cover all kinds of interesting facts and information. No matter if one particular user may find it unimportant!
Definitely no, please God no, to that Definitely Yes. Readers already have to wade through enough bloat and trivia as it is. Of course, I personally think articles like this should have their own Triviapedia or something, so whatever. --24.90.17.134 21:20, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Ray

Can we really take him off the current main cast? He may have at least a few more episodes. Therequiembellishere 03:23, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

There is no evidence that he is not going to be on the show any more. People jump the gun all the time, a little while back people took Goran (Luka) off the main cast lists even though he was just off the show for a couple of episodes. Until it is shown on-screen that he has left, he hasn't. My understanding is Shane West has a starring role in another series but that series has not been picked up for sure, so it looks to me like they are just preparing to write in the possibility in case he does leave. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who think that writing stuff on here is a competition - "look I wrote it first!" --CokeBear 04:33, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
Shane West has in fact left the series. His character, Ray Barnett, has moved back to his home state of Louisiana as of the season 13 finale and actor Shane West is not currently billed for any of the Season 14 Episodes on IMDB. - Damicatz 20:25, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
May I point out that IMDB's information comes from users, not NBC or the producers of ER? Clamster 22:56, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Stanley Tucci- should we add him?

Michael Ausiello has confirmed in his latest column that Stanley Tucci's character will be back as a regular next season. Should we add him to the list of current characters or a "coming soon section?" —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.12.245.169 (talk) 15:02, 9 May 2007 (UTC).

Kovac, gone?

Has kovac actuallu left the show as of season 13? I thought he just temporarily left to go back to croatia to see his sick father, is this a permanent departure though?

yes. he is gone as a series regular, but will appear as a guest star in a few episodes during season 14.

As listed in ER NBC site he's still on the cast. http://www.nbc.com/ER/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.20.204.179 (talk) 12:37, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Please add Kovac because he's still on NBC main cast list! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.20.204.179 (talk) 13:00, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

I moved him to past cast, because he's not in the opening credits anymore. Even if they don't appear in the show that episode, all regular's names pop up in the beginning 24.45.46.54 02:13, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Update: Kovac is NOT gone, and Goran Visnjic remains on the show and is a main cast member (actually he's still the male lead), but is only credited when he appears. He'll be back for an extended period soon. NBC, NBC Universal Media, and all related sites identify him as main cast. NBC makes that determination, not an arbitrary rule about who is/isn't in the credits on any given night.

Resume boxes?

I'd like to add resume boxes to the character articles, how exactly can you do that? I know how to do boxes, but I don't really know how to create them from scratch. If anyone could explain this or just link to an article with a resume box that I can use it would be really helpful. Jerkov 16:15, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Please do not mass delete the trivia section.

According to WP:TRIV, it is proper to integrate as much info into the article as possible, but this must be suitably done and not just dumped into sections. Innappropraite or unhelpful info can be deleted. However, please do not simply mass delete the trivia section. Josh 15:49, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Most of the section is original research, speculation, or pure trivia, none of which has any place in the article. I'm removing it again, if you feel strongly that any particular bit of it merits inclusion somewhere else then please feel free to put it in, but you shouldn't reinstate the section. --John24601 15:52, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes, should be removed for two reasons (1) it's a trivia section lazily tacked onto the end of an article - this isn't 'fun facts' but an encyclopedia and (2) I can’t see any references and any unreferenced material in wikipedia can be removed at any time.
This section has been tagged for some time now – I can’t see any move to incorporate it. It's not deletion that needs justification, rather, inclusion was never justified in the first place and should be justified before their return, bit by bit. Merbabu 22:27, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Sub-article suggestion

Having that large list of supporting cast without any context as to who they are/why they're there is somewhat messy. Therefore I suggest the creation of a sub-page - List of supporting characters in ER. Not sure it would require the parenthesis, but we might need to remain consistent. Anyway, the list could contain the various nurses, surgeons and admin staff that frequently appear, as well as some of the larger guest star roles - Alan Alda etc. Thoughts? HornetMike 22:55, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

I created that list and re-formatted it as a table, looks much tidier now. Josh 15:25, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Should the series overviews have their own article? They take up a lot of room here. Josh 16:24, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
I moved the season overviews into the episode list, but that article's getting rather bulky and might warrant a few subarticles of it's own. Josh 21:57, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Peacock terms, weasel words, a lengthy mess

The "notable guest stars" section is a disaster, and ought to just be deleted. Once weasel words and other filler are removed, not enough is left for it to merit its own section in the article. --24.90.17.134 21:16, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Removed filler info. It still seems to be enough to merit it's own section. Check it out. Josh 22:26, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
You're right, that's perfect! 24.90.17.134 07:39, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Final season?

I've heard rumors that this may be the final season of the show. Does anyone know of any sources that confirm or deny that fact? Even if it hasn't been confirmed, shouldn't it at least be mentioned on the article that it might be the last season? -Joltman 11:53, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Every season of every series "might" be the last season, because they never know when they'll get cancelled. It should only be mentioned in the article if there's a reliable source saying that it's the last season, or at least a reliable source discussing the rumour that it might be. --Maelwys 11:50, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
TV Series Finale reported in August that "it looks fairly certain that ER will be ending next spring after 14 seasons." Is that enough to put something in the article? -Joltman 19:22, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Where is WIlliam H. Macy?

I watched the program in the early seasons, and I recall William H. Macy appearing from time to time as some kind of senior staff surgeon. Perhaps some of the hardcore fans know more detail and can add this? 69.181.81.149 (talk) 07:39, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

William H. Macy played a recurring character, Dr. David Morgenstern seasons 1 through 4 (1994-1998) He was the Chief of Surgery & Emergency Services. In season 4 he had a heart attack and when he came back to work he was unable to preform surgery as he had throughout his career. During an operation he made a careless mistake and almost let Peter Benton get blamed. He finally came to his senses after Benton was suspended. As a result resigned and left County General. He made one final appearance in Season 8 at the funeral services for Mark Greene. --Brian 16:25, 8 January 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bps8876 (talkcontribs)

"ER" is Now a Show Where the "Writing" Features "Ass" and "Pissed Off" Every 5 or 10 Minutes

The writing on the show "ER" has been dumbed down tremendously over the years. Every 5 or 10 minutes on the show now, the "writers" insert some variation of the word "ass" or the words "pissed off." This show a lack of respect for the audience, a small vocabulary, and a determination to lower the intellectual level of the show. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.44.154.103 (talk) 23:28, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Additional section?

Do you guys think we should add a section on how the show portrays Christian characters. Every Christian on that show has been all whacked out, intolerant, ignorant, homophobic, etc. etc. All the stereotypes of Christians. I think if a show did the same with blacks or Muslims there'd be a HUGE public outcry and a whole page devoted to the controversy. It may also be worth mentioning that the show takes a liberal stance on many of the issues (abortion, abortion w/o consent of parents for minors, LBGT issues, etc). What do you all think... Considering the page for 24 mentions that the show MIGHT have a conservative stance and also points out that it portrays all the terrorists (who are Muslim) in a bad light, it should probably be included here. -Brad Kgj08 (talk) 20:48, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Only if you can find a reliable source that discusses that issue somewhere... --Maelwys (talk) 21:14, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Sounds like something that belongs somewhere among the pages devoted to Christianity. Putting it here strikes me as more or less a parallel endeavor to the Asian diversity thing - the reflection of one point-of-view. It's also clearly driven by a specific political agenda. Totally inappropriate. Drmargi (talk) 08:36, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Are you kidding? Pointing out the fact that ER completely misrepresents Christians and gives them all the negative stereotypes is not worth mentioning? What if they did this with Muslims or blacks? This is extremely offensive. This is not driven by a 'political agenda'. Are you suggesting that anyone who opposes negative stereotypes, specifically negative stereotypes being implemented, has a political agenda? If we went by your logic, we'd still be having black minstrel shows. Speaking of a political agenda, I think it is worthy to note that the show pushes a heavily leftist agenda. Let's admit the double standard here... if it pushed a conservative agenda there would be mention of it all over wikipedia (exp. as there is with the show 24). -Brad Kgj08 (talk) 13:59, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
It's an issue of original research, which isn't allowed on the site. Anyone can make observations from a television show. However, only observations published by reliable sources are permitted. --Madchester (talk) 16:02, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

No, I'm not kidding. And please, moderate your tone when responding to me. Your response is extreme, and in no way reflects my viewpoints. Moreover, I'd suggest you reread what I said, since you've put a rather inaccurate spin on my original statements. I simply responded to both the religious and political content readily discerned from your post, and in polite, reasonable language. I would appreciate it if you would read the rest of what I've written calmly and try to understand what I'm saying without putting a political spin on it or engaging in gross over-generalizations such as in your last remarks.

I don't follow 24 so I'm not familiar with the entry you cite, but on the surface it, too seems in inappropriate for the Wikipedia. However, the show draws a tremendous amount of ink, and it's possible there is documentation that a show based in part in the upper echelons of the American government might, for the purposes of story, have a political point-of-view, much as The West Wing did. If that is documented, well sourced, cited to be informational and presented in a neutral voice to the satisfaction of the editors there, it has a place. Based on that alone, I'm not sure your comparison is a valid one, but regardless it doesn't give you or any other editor license to load up the ER page with material that reflects one opinion and one point of view, absent the reliable sources two other editors have indicated must be there.

Once again, this is not a question of whether the issues you raise worth mentioning. It's a question of when fact crosses over into opinion, which has no place in an encyclopedia. Thus my comparison to the Asian diversity issue (regrettably, my comparison must include someone's bad behavior, but concentrate on the principle, not the person putting forth the idea.) You've made it clear you see the issue through what I'd interpret as a conservative Christian lens - your comments about abortion, etc. put your previous remarks on both a political and religious footing. I don't see the show the same way, and would find your entry inappropriate on both political and religious grounds. I don't agree with either of your viewpoints and can cite story points to refute each of them. And that, alone, makes clear what you're wanting to do is not only to put in independent research as Madchester has noted, but also are violating rules regarding neutrality. No matter how strongly you feel about the issue, and clearly you do, it simply isn't appropriately part of the ER page. Drmargi (talk) 18:49, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Well obviously I would find sources to back up my opinion. And let me ask you this again, if every Muslim on this show was a terrorist, and there were articles, etc. documenting this, would you find it acceptable to include this on the page? This has nothing to do with a christian, conservative, liberal, whatever point of view. This has to do with constantly and consistently portraying a certain group of people in a very negative light. Considering that the people it completely misrepresents makes up about 60% of the population, I think that this is worth noting. Kgj08 (talk) 23:56, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Since your question is rhetorical, it's difficult to know what I'd do until I saw the actual entry, and not really germane regardless. I would consider this in gathering your sources: the most visibly religious character on the show is a Christian, but not in the evangelical sense in which it appears you define it. Rather, he is a Roman Catholic. That character went through a years-long crisis of faith, and came out of it with his faith not abandoned but renewed. He has confronted having to reconcile his personal views on birth and abortion with his responsibility to his patients and the oath he took as a doctor in recent years. I found, as a Catholic myself, that the treatment of the subject matter was both sensitive and inspiring, particularly given the actor playing the role is himself a Catholic. We're not talking about a secondary character here but the show's male lead. I refer, of course, to Goran Visnjic's character Dr. Luka Kovac. That alone demands more than the one-sided view I see in your earlier comments. Consequently, any discussion of ER's handling of Christian characters would have to be balanced to include its positive portrayals, or I can easily see justification to edit or remove the section.

Frankly, I'm not sure you'll be able to find reliable sources to support your contentions. Drmargi (talk) 03:04, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Season 15

I've just reverted to edits adding references regarding Season 15 and the number of episodes to be broadcast after ER returns. Thusfar, this exists as a rumor published by an E! columnist who is not always accurate, and picked up as accurate by minor entertainment press sources and regular media. NBC has made no further announcement about the status of ER to date. Although I think we recognize it's likely to be true, until we have a reliable source such as NBC, it isn't verified and doesn't belong in the article. Drmargi (talk) 03:16, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

There has been a lot of attention to the possibility of a fifteenth season of ER in the media in the last few days, largely due to comments made by David Zabel in the Hollywood Reporter, then picked up by Variety and a range of secondary media. To date, Zabel that they're "in talks" but notes NBC has not made an official decision regarding a fifteenth season, and Clooney has not commented on the possibility of an appearance except to say "no comment." As such, none of this belongs in the article until NBC makes a return, and any casting, official. Drmargi 00:13, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
