Suggested move
editHe is listed as Earl Averill, Jr., but he is not a Junior. His father's name was Howard Earl Averill and he was known by his middle name. The subject of this article is Earl Douglas Averill and he was known by his first name, or as "Earl D. Averill." Adding the Junior is a convenient way to tell the two apart, but it is inaccurate. Earl D. Averill generally resented being tagged as "Junior" because his father's major league accomplishments were significant and the younger Earl felt that the name put him in position to be unfairly compared to one the game's all-time greats.
I don't know Wikipedia editing tools well enough to make the changes. But I would suggest renaming the article from Earl Averill, Jr. to Earl D. Averill and redirecting any searches for Earl Averill, Jr. to the newly named page.
Thank you for your consideration. - Randy Averill (son of Earl D. Averill) Reaverill (talk) 20:56, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hi @Reaverill:, thanks for pointing this out. I'll take a look and see what I can do. Valfontis (talk) 23:54, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
- P.S. I'm sorry for your loss. Valfontis (talk) 00:26, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings and condolences. I believe that the article title should remain as is. Wikipedia's policy on article names generally prefers the name by which a subject is most commonly referred in the sources which support the information in the article. Despite your father's preference, the "Jr." distinction is the one by which he is best known, and certainly more commonly so than "Earl D. Averill".
- Earl Douglas Averill already exists as a redirect to this article. I have just now created Earl D. Averill as another such redirect, and I have also added verbiage to the lead section to emphasize that he wasn't technically a "Junior". Feel free to tweak these changes as needed. --Finngall talk 18:30, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Finngall. I've also added a "hatnote" to the top of each page to further clarify things. It's also possible that the Earl Averill page could be made into a disambiguation page but I would want to get the baseball WikiProject on board with that before we did the necessary page moves. I also made redirects for H. Earl Averill and Howard Earl Averill. Valfontis (talk) 01:21, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for the clarification, and for the added verbiage. Reaverill (talk) 21:00, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

On Base Streak
editIt's mentioned he shares a streak of 17 PAs of reaching base in every PA with Piggy Ward from June 3rd to June 10th 1962, but it isn't true. He grounded into a force out on June 8th 1962 in the middle of this supposed streak. I think that blurb should be erased and the mention of him also be erased from Piggy Ward's page 2600:1700:7600:2E90:F980:1458:4F8C:26D7 (talk) 05:01, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
