Similar articles explain the origin of the name of the earldom, if this is not obviously a place name. This one does not. At the first creation of this earldom, did the name Clarendon come from the (by then ruined) Palace of Clarendon near Salisbury? The creation (at least of the first earldom) referred to "Clarendon in the County of Wilts" (i.e. Wiltshire), so presumably it was indeed a reference to the palace. Proteus (Talk) 19:31, 7 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
