Talk:Earl of Thomond

I can't find the appropriate book but I have a feeling that there is at least one Earl missing. Anyone know?--Septemberfourth476 (talk) 01:42, 23 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

After 7th Earl

edit

The article on the 7th Earl says that he died in 1691. His heir Henry Horatio O'Brien, Lord Ibrackan died in 1690 and did not succeed. The article does not make clear who the 8th Earl was and how related. He was created Viscount Tadcaster in 1714, but that article redirects here. Lord Ibrackan's wife was Katherine O'Brien, 7th Baroness Clifton, but that article has an improbable link implying that she was wife the 8th Earl. I do not have a book to enable me to resolve this issue. Peterkingiron (talk) 13:40, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

That was my mistake, sorry. The 8th Earl was the son of Henry Horatio O'Brien, Lord Ibracken and Lady Henrietta Somerset, daughter of Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort. Choess (talk) 20:52, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
It is even more complicated as there was also Henry O'Brien, Lord Ibrackan (died 1678), an elder half-brother; no wonder I was confused. In trying to sort this out I have made and then undone a number of edits. I hope that I have not added to the confusion in doing so! Baroness Clifton was in fact the wife of the elder brother. Very interesting. Good digging. Can you explain why the titles were forfeit though? Laurel Lodged (talk) 18:22, 21 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Solved! The heir was the Jacobite 6th Viscount Clare, whose predecessor the 3rd Vicount had been attainted in 1691. This presumably forfeited his remainder as a descendant of the 1st or 2nd Earl in the Earldom. (I traced this through http://www.thepeerage.com/ but when I wnet to the WP article Viscount Clare, I found the information given there. Peterkingiron (talk) 22:34, 21 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

No disrespect intended but honestly, is this some sort of joke?76.188.98.89 (talk) 04:29, 21 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Geography

edit

Need some indication of what the geographical extent of this earldom was. Did it cover all of the former Kingdom of Thomond? All of what is now Co. Limerick? Both seem kind of unlikely to me, but it would be good to know for certain, regardless. This earldom is probably the "Thomond" mentioned in a 1634 ms., since the earldom did exist at that time.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  04:53, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
