Another use
editAnother use of the song was in the 1980 TV version of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, where Lizzie's sister Mary Bennett did a comically awful job of trying to sing it. (the scene was memorable enough that I recognized the tune 20 years later on BUFFY) CharlesTheBold24.30.124.40 03:39, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
With regards to this section, could someone put it into chronological order? It seems very messy as it is, flitting back and forth. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.22.99.16 (talk) 06:45, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Please expand the article
editI've added an expand request to the article. Such a famous song should have more about its history. When was it written? Where did it originate? Even if definitive answers are not known (as is the case with so many traditional songs) there should be historical information about it somewhere. Roger Whittaker, prior to his live recorded performance from 1975, jokes it was in the English Hit Parade of 1530. So was it? 68.146.41.232 (talk) 02:54, 7 December 2007 (UTC) This song, one of my favorites, was sung frequently in our Peninsula School (Menlo Park, CA) assemblies in the 1940's. If memory serves, it was contained in a song book called "America Sings," long out of print. The lyrics are significantly different, and I quote them here:
Early one morning Just as the sun began to glow I heard a maiden singing in the vale below. Soft was her melody, Clearly it came to me. (Chorus C Maj) CegC'bagfedCbC
And as I listened, Her melody my sad heart cheered. And in the distance her dainty form appeared. Truly a maiden fair, Sweetly she sang this air, (Chorus)
