Expansion/Image help?
editI've added the requested infobox and expanded the article in general. I think I have one more source which I can't get to at the moment; if there's anything useful there, I'll add it later.
One thing I didn't do is add an image to the infobox. There's a scan of the record label at http://rateyourmusic.com/misc/link_image?album_id=420534&q=The+Essex+Easier+Said+Than+Done+%2f+Are+You+Going+My+Way and one of what appears to be a non-US single sleeve at http://rateyourmusic.com/misc/link_image?album_id=723100
I'm not sure of how to upload the image here, so if someone could handle that, I'd be appreciative. Either one seems to be appropriate and based on the infobox guidelines should be covered under fair use.
Which is A, which is B?
editThe main article on The Essex says "Easier..." was the A side, but this article says it was the B side. However the standard info box on the right side of this article says the other song was the B side. Can somebody verify which it is and bring the articles into conformity? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.94.159.215 (talk) 14:22, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- Well, what the article says, based on the Shannon/Javna source, is that "Easier..." was originally intended to be the B-side, but that it emerged as the more popular side. That made it the de facto A-side (and it probably officially was designated as such at some point). So I don't necessarily see a contradiction, but perhaps it's unclear. Suggestions? Of course if anyone has additional sources, so much the better. Brettalan (talk) 22:41, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
A cover?
editIs this [1] mimed or sung? See Laurel Lea. Moondyne (talk) 12:58, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
- I would guess mimed, but clearly she's singing (that is, she's not miming to the Essex version). Do you know if her version was a hit in Australia? It would certainly be worth mentioning in the article if so. Brettalan (talk) 03:09, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
- I don't know if it was a hit in Australia, but if it wasn't think it should have been. I will investigate. I really like it - even better that the original IMHO. Laurel had a great voice and was a babe. Moondyne (talk) 09:10, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Teletype joke
editI'm sure someone said this: "The song's rhythm was inspired by the sound of the Teletype machines in the communications office of their Marine post." as a joke. The song has a fast samba or bossa-nova rhythm. This is however, good urban legend material. 72.177.123.145 (talk) 23:09, 24 January 2013 (UTC) Eric
- This joke has also found its way into the Teletype article. I like the joke, and there is a source for it with an quote by one of the writers of the song, William Linton! http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1911 ... Maybe I was wrong and this is the origin of the beat although it still sounds like a bossa nova (with a bit of a rock beat) to me. If this is really, really true and not a joke, it's probably worthy of a mention in the noise music article. 72.177.123.145 (talk) 17:17, 8 May 2013 (UTC) Eric
- There's a difference between "inspired" and "copied". Search 'teletype' on YouTube and you'll find lots of examples of machines running at fast and medium tempos. It's not far-fetched at all that someone would get a song idea from listening to these machines clattering. Gershwin was inspired by the rhythm of a passenger train, for example. In any case, WP is merely reporting what someone said inspired them. There's no requirement to prove whether or not it was possible. - LuckyLouie (talk) 12:55, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
