While East Garfield Park may be featuring low levels of gentrification, despite the proclamations of newsweek, it is still very much an isolated, high poverty neighborhood. I live nearby and travel to the community frequently.

While gentrification is certainly a part of EGP recent history, this article gives it way too much importance, ignoring the serious plight of its residents. I would suggest that gentrification should play only a minor part in any entry on gafield park 71.194.186.73 08:58, 9 May 2007 (UTC)jpReply

The Chicago Tribune reference in the Crime section of this page, covering 2014 crime rates, no longer has the mentioned content. It's not elsewhere on their site or in any archive. So, the material must be regarded as unverified per Wikipedia and I've marked it as such.

Here, for the record, is the original reference:

<ref>{{cite web | title=Crime in Chicagoland - East Garfield Park | publisher=chicagotribune.com | url=http://crime.chicagotribune.com/chicago/community/east-garfield-park}}</ref>

If you can find that material anywhere, please fix the citation. Thanks. Alternatively, I may come back and add something based on newer crime data. IntegrityPen (talk) 02:40, 7 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Removed Crime section

edit

Removed the Crime section. None of the text in the Crime section was verifiable, due to uncited claims or dead citation links. In addition, other community area pages do not have similar crime sections, even those with higher per capita 2020 total reported crime rates. Per capita crime reporting is also tricky because some community areas have low populations and small changes in crime counts can heavily impact per capita rankings. Finally, crime statistics can be broken down by total reported crimes, sexual assaults, robberies, homicides, etc. and fluctuate dramatically from year to year; it would require more than a few sentences to adequately report on this across the 77 community areas and update it each year. (Oh, and if you look at the data, most crimes in East Garfield Park are petty crimes in the larger scheme of things, induced by economic inequality, systemic racism, etc., e.g. possession of small amounts of drugs, loitering and public intoxication.)

For the record, here is the deleted section's prior contents:

==Crime== East Garfield Park has long-standing issues with violent crime and property crime; in 2014, it was ranked 6th out of 77 [[Community areas in Chicago]] in violent crime and 10th among Chicago community areas in property crimes.{{citation needed|date=April 2023}} The neighborhood experienced precipitous population decline from its peak of 70,091 at the 1950 census, down over 70% to a low of 19,992 in 2020. The many vacant lots and derelict buildings left behind have exacerbated the crime issues.{{citation needed|date=April 2023}}
