The article ends with these two sentences:
"Together with A.W. Finch and Ilmari Aalto, he painted a large scene of Koli in 1911. It can be seen in the restaurant of Helsinki railway station." The scene of Koli was in my view originally painted by Eero Järnefelt. The version which can be seen in the restaurant of Helsinki railway station, was enlarged collectively by Eero Järnefelt, A.W. Finch and Ilmari Aalto from a smaller pointillistic version of the painting. This is what I can say in favour of my view: There is a naturalistic version of the painting which earlier was the property of Helsingin Säästöpankki (Helsinki Bank). After the Finnish bank crisis the painting became part of the collection of the Finnish National Gallery. Another pointillistic version which could be the original of the "large scene" was donated in 1913 by the heirs of Th. von Frenckell to August Ramsay. Both of these paintings were signed by Eero Järnefelt alone. The "large scene" was signed by all three painters. A photograph of the event in 1920 when the enlargement was finilized, documents the fact that all three artists participated in the effort of enlarging the painting from a smaller version. However, I would be of the opinion that it would be a bit misleading to state in the above way, that the artistic work should be attributed to all three painters. pdonner (talk) 10:28, 27 November 2007 (UTC) |
