Talk:Elephant's Trunk Nebula

There should be a separate article on IC1396

edit

It looks as though there was once an article in IC 1396 which for some reason has been removed as I found a cross-reference to it within this article, which referred back to this one. There is also a x-ref to this page in the Mu Cephei article (Mu Cep is also seen within IC 1396 though not within the Elephant Trunk), which now makes no sense. IC 1396 refers to both a star cluster and the nebula, but this article confused the two.

I think there should be a separate article on IC 1396 as it is a well-known object in its own right, worthy of an article and photo, and the Elephant's Trunk is just a small part of it. Currently, one needs to search outside Wikipedia for information on this object. Robin Scagell (talk) 15:05, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the much larger ionized gas region IC 1396 located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light-years away from Earth. The combined action of the light from the massive star ionizing and compressing the rim of the cloud, and the wind from the young stars shifting gas from the center outward led to very high compression in the nebula. This pressure has triggered the current generation of protostars. This photograph of the Elephant's Trunk Nebula was taken with a 127 mm (5.0 in) refracting telescope.
