Who was the first Ambassador?

edit
  • On September 25, Robert Butler presented his credentials as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Australian Government, becoming the first ambassador to Australia.

But United States Ambassador to Australia shows Butler was the third, not the first. Why the discrepancy? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 00:17, 12 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@JackofOz: See updated table. The title of US Ambassador to Australia was introduced upon Butler's appointment. The previous two appointees were US Ministers to Australia. However, the appointees are numbered in from the first minister and there was no restart from Butler; so Culvahouse who presented his credentials this week to the GG is as the 23rd Ambassador.
