Formal opening
editThe uncited statement Queen Mary formally opened the rebuilt English Bridge on 26 October 1927 refers to a 'never was' event. The Prince of Wales was scheduled to visit Shrewsbury at that time to inter alia open the bridge but the visit was cancelled in mourning due to the death on the 24th (in Shrewsbury) of Queen Mary's brother the Marquess of Cambridge. However the Queen on a visit to Shrewsbury during August 1927 did pass in her car over the bridge after its completion and a plaque was put up post-October 1927 to record that journey as the opening - a mutually agreed re-write of history, it might be considered. The Shrewsbury Chronicle newspaper covered the events of 1927 but I have been denied access to Shropshire Archives under Covid related conditions.Cloptonson (talk) 18:07, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
