If an entente is just a diplomatic union that won't explain why the Deutsches Reich got irritated by the Entente between Great Britain and France. A common misunderstanding is that the two superpowers' entente comprised a promise to each other mutually military assistance in case a third power would attack one of them or otherwise would become a threat to their spheres of interest. However this promise wasn't a guarantee, as diplomacy to weaken the tensions was to be the first necessary step taken.
As France also tied itself to tsarist Russia, when the Deutsches Reich attacked Russia in 1914, France declared war on the Germans but as the attack by Germany was provoked Great Britain didn't join the fight until it became clear neutral Belgium got invaded.
Therefore one must conclude an entente isn't an aggression pact, yet a defensive one to contain the spheres of interest and prevent a war by gentleman's agreements not to clash. The real reason for the British/French Entente wasn't the ambition of the German Kaiser, but that both countries did clash in Africa on their respective hunting for colonial territories, so they came to an agreement of sharing Africa amongst each other. This irritated the ambitious German Kaiser, who tried in vain to divide the two superpowers. 83.85.143.141 (talk) 00:45, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
