The Godfather

edit

The article on the film states that Coppola came close to casting Borgnine, who was favored by the studio, instead of Brando. I think this is fairly significant and (unless I missed it?) should be mentioned in the acting section. Tulliux (talk) 15:28, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Health Considering Age

edit

Ernest is 93 and looks like he's in his 70's. He looks amazing considering his age, and in fact, it is what drew me to this article. I am disappointed that there's no information on the page about it though. --208.51.23.54 (talk) 13:53, 31 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well if you can find any reliable sources that discuss this then we can add it. If all you have is that you think that he looks good for his age, it does not belong. ~~ GB fan ~~ 14:19, 31 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Borgnine has publicly attributed his longevity to masturbating "a lot." See http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/14/ernest-borgnine-i-masturb_n_118938.html 70.231.232.200 (talk) 20:56, 18 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
This seems less like a legitimate statement and more like the kind of "I'm 90 and making sex jokes" shock humor employed in Adam Sandler films and anything involving Betty White. --Boycool (talk) 00:48, 19 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Awards

edit

Why is the Los Angeles Times' thoughts on his Lifetime Achievement Award--which they disparage not because he doesn't deserve it but because they disagree with his opinions on matters entirely unrelated to the awarding of awards--in any way relevant?72.10.119.239 (talk) 04:51, 31 January 2011 (UTC)curiousReply

If you would read the article you would see that this is mentioned. IMO it does have notability problems as it does not seem to have gained any traction with the media beyond the LAT article. There was no evidence that anyone at the ceremony had any problems with it - this is in contrast to what happened at the Academy Awards in 1999 with Elia Kazan. MarnetteD | Talk 20:17, 31 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I read the source material, but I shouldn't have to. No where in the article are his political or social opinions mentioned as being controversial. If this is a big deal, then there should be more than one opinion writer talking about it. Removing reference. SeanNovack (talk) 19:57, 2 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

File:Ernest-Borgnine 2004.JPEG to appear as POTD soon

edit

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Ernest-Borgnine 2004.JPEG will be appearing as picture of the day on January 24, 2012. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2012-01-24. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :) Thanks! howcheng {chat} 17:58, 20 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

American actor Ernest Borgnine, when he was made an honorary chief petty officer of the United States Navy in October 2004. After being discharged from the navy after World War II and having no direction in his life, Borgnine began his acting career on the advice of his mother, who thought his personality was well-suited for the stage. This began a six-decade period mostly as a character actor on stage, film, and television. His most famous roles were as the lead in Marty, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, the title role in McHale's Navy, and as a voice actor in the cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants.Photo: Mark D. last paragraph of "personal life"

edit

Is the last sentence about Borgnine's whispered comment/joke relevant? It seems more like a snickering gotcha submitted by a high school sophomore. Wikipedia is not, by its own admission, an encyclopedia of every little thing a person has done or said, but the relevant things someone has done. The paragraph should be removed by a moderator for its pointlessness.Catherinejarvis (talk) 18:35, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Missing from Borgnine's film credits...GATTACA

edit

The 1997 sci fi film GATTACA featured Borgnine in a small (but very memorable role) as a head janitor (and the main character's boss) who is ironically named "Caesar". Borgnine, along with the film's lead character, had been relegated to this low job because his DNA profile is considered "substandard" in that near future world where people are not allowed to advance unless their DNA looks good. The film's too few Borgnine scenes show the star's ability to make such a tiny role memorable!108.74.158.53 (talk) 02:56, 9 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

The content so far is okay but its obviously clear that no mention was made of Ernest's acting role in the 1980s TV series "Battlestar Galactica". How is it that the contributors of this published content forgot to mention that Ernest acted alongside Dirk Benedict and others in BSG? Wasn't he the "Fleet Communications Officer"? I know I remember seeing him appear in the series, but I can't understand why his name didn't appear in the cast (see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076984/fullcredits). I've scoured the web for any proof that Ernest Borgnine and could not find any...I absolutely know and remember seeing him in the series, before he appeared again in the TV series "Airwolf" A.danhamidu (talk) 09:12, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Alternate title for Emperor of the North Pole

edit

After its initial release this film had second one that was titled Shack which was Borgnine's character. I can remember the ads featuring some of his most brutal scenes. I can't seem to find any info about this on the net. I know that some of you are aces at research so I thought leave this note for any of you who might be able to find a reliable source about this so that we can add it too the article for the film and to the notes section of his filmography. Thanks ahead of time for your efforts. MarnetteD | Talk 19:13, 9 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Only Child Or One Sister

edit

I noted that the article first states Mr. Borgnine was an only child, then later indicates he had one sister. I'm not sure which is correct, but thought I would bring it to your attention. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.240.33.211 (talk) 02:37, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Personal Life (again)

edit

The previous derogatory item was removed, properly. Yet a new one is added - the story (footnote 14) of Borgnine's conversation with Ethel Merman, which is basically an insult to both of them and comes from an uncredited website that amounts to unprovable gossip. Remember, wikipedia is not a list of everything a person may or may not have done or said, but relevant information which can be credited to a reputable source. This website is not a source and the "story" should be removed.Catherinejarvis (talk) 18:09, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Since there hasn't been a new source added in a month and source 14 is about him dressing as a clown, how about it you actually cite what source you are talking about? Niteshift36 (talk) 18:38, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
My mistake, and thank you for noticing it. I'm referring to footnote 11, not 14, the story about Ethel Merman in the personal life section, which comes from a gossip website. It adds nothing and is not reliable.Catherinejarvis (talk) 18:07, 20 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Removed. Niteshift36 (talk) 18:40, 20 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pronunc.

edit

Is there really a diphthong or glide or [o:] in Borgnine? wouldn't an open [O:] (as in the Borg, or boredom, or shore) be more English? I am aware that Italian /o/ or /O/ is often /ou/ - especially in US English - but still, in front of /r/? That seems a bit odd. 178.83.53.75 (talk) 12:05, 15 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

"He was noted for his gruff but calm voice, Machiavellian eyebrows, [...]" Did he/she mean mephistophelian eyebrows?

You description is closer but the source uses the term Machiavellian. The whole thing is a bit too flowery and could probably be removed. MarnetteD|Talk 21:05, 16 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

"He received the special honor for his naval service and support of the Navy and navy families worldwide."

Not sure how to expand on his "support"; based solely on personal experience.

Some years back, on a Valentine's Day, ran into Mr. Borgnine at the VA hospital in Washington, D.C., as he was exiting an elevator. He smiled, gave me a hearty "Hello!," and shook my hand. The next week, I told the social worker I was seeing there about the exchange, and he said that Mr. Borgnine regularly visited VA hospitals on special days like Valentine's, Memorial, etc. BubbleDine (talk) 14:55, 9 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

How to describe his role in "The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez"

edit

Possible ways to describe Borgnine's last role:

  1. "In late 2011, Borgnine completed what would be his last film, playing Rex Page in The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez.
  2. In late 2011, Borgnine completed what would be his last film, playing the title role in The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez.
  3. In late 2011, Borgnine completed what would be his last film, playing Rex Page in the title role of The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez.
  4. Other.

First one is the current one. User:MarnetteD likes it that way, I prefer #2. (#3 is a possible compromise I suppose). I prefer #2 because "Rex Page" doesn't tell the reader much. Rex Page could be the lead, second lead, minor character, or whatever. (This is assuming you haven't seen the movie, which few have I guess.) This character could be named Rex Page, Joe Shmoe, or anything else -- it's not important. "Title role" tells the reader that he probably played an important role (he did, altho I'm not sure it was the lead so I can't say that). (The question of whether a film that doesn't have an actual personal name as the title can have a title could bear on this. Was Jackie Coogan the title role in "The Kid"? Sidney Poitier in "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner"? Gene Wilder in "The Man With One Red Shoe"? In my opinion, yes.) Herostratus (talk) 02:48, 15 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I never said that I "like it that way" which you would understand if you had actually read my edit summaries. The second one which you "like" is confusing since his characters name is not in the title but another characters is. The third one is preferable and should hopefully prevent readers from thinking that EB played VF. BTW you probably should refresh you understanding of WP:INUNIVERSE since all of your examples fit that item. MarnetteD|Talk 03:12, 15 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Honorary CPO

edit

In 2004, Borgnine received the honorary rank of Chief Petty Officer from the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Terry D. Scott - the U.S. Navy's highest ranking enlisted sailor at the time - for Borgnine's support of the Navy and Navy families worldwide.

Chief Petty officer

edit

HE was promoted to Chief petty Officer by MCPON of the navy. for 12 years his friends called him Chief you dishonor his memory by demoting him to first class. If you want to say Chief Petty officer Honorary that would be acceptable and much more accurate than demoting him to first class at death. 2600:1015:A025:C196:1DCB:B2E:913C:C45C (talk) 09:22, 28 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
