The wiki page states that Boyer's 1991 article led to educational programming like "Sesame Street." But "Sesame Street" debuted in 1969. I recently re-read Boyer's 1990 Scholarship Reconsidered Report and two major themes struck me, namely, connectedness and dialogue. I think many colleges and universities fall short of integrating these two themes into their programmes. Instead of a programme being well 'connected', all too often it is fragmented such that the students struggle to identify how the different modules relate to one another. Similarly, I think that the power of dialogue (student-student and student-teacher) is ignored in favor of education models based on competitive learning, information delivery, memorizing facts and methods to be reproduced in an exam and then forgotten. Sorry if this all sounds a bit critical and of course there are many positives of many higher education programmes. Also, the above is just my interpretation following a re-read of Boyer's report. So please don't just take my word for it but rather study the report yourself and share your interpretation in this discussion forum. Its interesting that Boyer was the most honored academic (>140 honorary doctorates) of all time. I propose that if we, the academic community, really want to honor his memory then let's study his teachings and engage in a dialogue on them.
