In order of publication (though not of composition) his op.1 may have been the first work intended primarily for the viola- though such claims of "firsts" are always tenuous/uncomfortable/difficult to make with such a large literature to survey. (I think Mendelssohn's sonata for the instrument was composed before Naumann was born, but published after Naumann and Mendelssohn were both deceased, so the opening caveat is intentional...)
