Macau
editThere's a nice one in Macau too. 205.174.22.28 03:25, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
Why redirect?
editPromenade redirects here. Yet the article itself says "Esplanade and promenade are sometimes used interchangeably, but that is a mistake." So let's redirect one term to the other, implying they're equivalent, and yet explicitly state that they are not. Whoo! --Buddy13 (talk) 22:03, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
interlanguage link to german should be changed
editAt the moment it links to Esplandade. But it should link to Promenade. In the german article to de:Esplanade it explicit says so: "Esplanade nennt man dann auch allgemein Plätze und Promenaden vor einem größeren, öffentlichen Gebäude, später gelegentlich auch in Gärten – während auch im Französischen der Aspekt des Platzes überwiegt, bezeichnet der Begriff im Englischen das, was das heute deutsche Promenade – zu frz. promener ‚spazieren‘ – bezeichnet (falscher Freund / false friend)" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.206.173.231 (talk) 23:00, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Disneyland Resort
editThe space between Disneyland and California Adventure is referred to as an esplanade.Cousert (talk)
The second time I worked at Disneyland back in 1996, during orientation we we're taught that the large expansive space between Disneyland Park and Disney's (now Disney) California Adventure was referred to as the esplanade and the the pedestrian walkways leading to it on both sides were referred to as the promenade. However, I've never been able to find a proper reference to make a legitimate Wikipedia entry. Anyone? - Jordan Clements Ross
The interwiki links to sv and fi should be removed
editIn Swedish the word esplanad has one specific meaning: a wide street with a tree-planted median, sometimes referring to the median itself. "A long, open, level area, usually next to a river or large body of water, where people may walk" is called a strandpromenad ("beach promenade") and can never be called an esplanad. Since Sweden and Finland has a common history the Finnish word puistokatu ("park street") refers to the same street type as the Swedish esplanad. /80.78.215.180 (talk) 16:03, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
WP:PTOPIC?
editThere is no consensus in this RfC because of limited participation. JHunterJ recommended creating a Wikipedia:Requested moves discussion, which could attract more participation.

In most parts of the English-speaking world, esplanade means what it says here: a walkway, of various kinds.
In West Bengal, Esplanade means specifically Esplanade, Kolkata; there, that name is WP:PTOPIC. I have lost count of the number of links to Esplanade which I have corrected. (OK many of them may have been to bus routes – but that's another, well-known, issue.) Special:WhatLinksHere/Esplanade is a disaster area.
My proposal. In no way do I suggest that Esplanade, Kolkata is WP:PTOPIC. I do suggest that, on a worldwide basis, there is no WP:PTOPIC. I propose: (1) rename Esplanade to Esplanade (walkway) (2) move the contents of Esplanade (disambiguation) to Esplanade, with the necessary adjustments.
Any such change will get picked up by User:DPL bot, will be logged by it into WP:TDD, and will induce the usual low-level cursing among WP:DPL regulars about editors who don't WP:FIXDABLINKS. No matter, we've been there before. Narky Blert (talk) 02:57, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- Incoming links is part of the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, criteria, but only part of it. In particular, on a worldwide basis, there does seem to be a primary topic, even if in the local area of West Bengal it doesn't. Compare, for example, the information about "Birmingham" at WP:NWFCTM. -- JHunterJ (talk) 15:31, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- @JHunterJ: That "local area of West Bengal" has 91 million people living in it.
- Perhaps you might wish to clean up Special:WhatLinksHere/Esplanade? Narky Blert (talk) 04:55, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
- (Half the links look like bus timetables which shouldn't be in Wiki anyway, but that's a separate issue.) Narky Blert (talk) 05:07, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
- 91M is still a small percentage of English-speakers, even if all of them speak English, and even if all of them would first think of the place in Kolkata. Perhaps we (the Wikipedia editorship) might wish to clean up Wikipedia, yes, but pointing out the guidelines for primary topic doesn't mean that the only mop is mine. At this point, though, you probably want to go ahead and propose the move via WP:RM. -- JHunterJ (talk) 14:03, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
- Move Esplanade to Promenade (which in general I believe is the primary name in any event), Have Esplanade be a disambig.Icewhiz (talk) 13:31, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Edinburgh Castle
editThe area of land at the entrance to Edinburgh Castle is also known as the The Esplanade, but obviously is nowhere near a body of water. 150.143.238.64 (talk) 07:33, 9 February 2024 (UTC)
