On the fringe OR Map
editA series of users (probably one) keep inserting a non-academic map. Here are actual academic maps: [1] [2] [3][4] [5]
Note the last one is by the Columbia Gulf Project.
The non-academic map is self-made [6] and cites a source: ""Geography and population of Turkish people in Iran" Alireza Sarrafi, Journal "Dilmaj", No. 2, 2004". However, "Dilmaj" was a nationalist magazine run by ethnic-nationalist activists (Alireza Sarrafi who has no academic credentials and believes Sumerians are Turks - look up his names in Persian with Sumerians). Such a map is obviously WP:fringe. For example, the second language in Gilan is Talysh/Persian (after Gilaki) and second language in Mazandaran is Persian (if not Mazandarani as second and Persian first today). The Northern Khorasan area has majority Kurdish that has been wiped out by the map (see the academic maps above). Even Bandar Azali in Gilan is shown as Turkish which is not the case. Parts of Kordistan province are shown as majority Kurdish (Garus and Bijar), but actually the majority is Bijar/Garusi Kurds (see the Persian wikipedia article with references therein). Also Hamadan city and Asadabad etc..is shown majority Turkish, which is not. Neither are many other places in that map. So the fringe map has no place in Wikipedia as it contradicts academic sources and maps. The university of Texas and Gulf 2000 project (from Columbia university) are currently the best maps available and are by academic Western sources. So the fringe map cannot be used unless in a page about nationalism (Turkish). --96.255.251.165 (talk) 03:54, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Here is more info on the fringe map. It is madeup by ethnic activist without even a Ph.D. called Alireza Sarrafi: [7][8]. He also has claimed Sumerians, Scythians..etc. as Turkish and is trying to claim Nowruz as Turkish [9]. So it is not WP:RS --96.255.251.165 (talk) 17:22, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Iranian peoples?
editThis article, as well as some other articles about Iran on Wikipedia, lumps together such disparate ethnicities as Pashtuns, Persians, Balochs, and Kurds under an "Iranian peoples" category that none of the cited sources use themselves. I guess some of this is a reaction to the Azerbaijanis' Pan-Turkism, but it implies some unity that isn't there, so I'll disaggregate them unless good reason is goven. Shrigley (talk) 12:54, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
No this isn't "some unity that isn't there", remember this is a talk page to benefit the article. Not a forum for you to discuss your factually incorrect opinion. The Iranian peoples are a cultural, linguistic and racial group, by the way this also includes Iranian Azerbaijanis. You can go read the history behind it, then you will understand the answer to the question you have written and hopefully correct your opinion. Migboy123 (talk) 10:19, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
...Why Afro-Iranians are mentioned?
editAs the subject states why aren't they mentioned at all???--2606:6000:60C1:1D00:65C5:62B:504F:9BA1 (talk) 23:17, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

That table in the beginning of this article is wrong and it does not represents cia data. According to the CIA World Factbook, the ethnic breakdown of Iran is as follows: Persian 61%, Azeri 16%, Kurd 10%, Lur 6%, Baloch 2%, Arab 2%, Turkmen and Turkic tribes 2%, other 1%. This is the latest cia estimate. See cited references. I have fixed the table. But one editor restored wrong info [10] and [11]. Then he/she submitted a false report and now this article is locked. Please restore the fixed version. Link to CIA source (the latest estimate used on this article, see people and society section). The current table is falsified by ip and that editor, and it does not matches with cited CIA estimate. --124.212.160.217 (talk) 23:48, 9 September 2015 (UTC) 124.212.160.217 (talk) 23:48, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Title change to "Ethnicities of Iran"
editEthnicities "in" Iran makes it sound like those ethnicities are not Iranian or they are foreign. Between 90-94% (Including Azerbaijanis) of Iran's population is of the Iranian peoples. There is a region that ethno-cultural family is given the name "Iranian". Thus I recommend the title be changed to "Ethnicities of Iran". Migboy123 (talk) 10:25, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Including recent study by Kevan Harris
editSince there was no official survey on the Ethnic topic in Iran, this recent study helps the multiple sources. https://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/QYMZZU42IKBP6DCPSTHB/full?target=10.1080/01419870.2021.1895275
Article says: "Using the 2016 Iran Social Survey, which asks open-ended questions on ethno-racial self-identification, we find wide variation in how ethnic identity is expressed. On the one hand, the findings suggest that a sizable degree of mismatch exists, where concepts of ethnic groupness are confusing or not fully recognizable to many individuals." User:LouisAragon

- The vast majority of sources don't agree with this source (see WP:UNDUE). The source itself seems rather strange (almost contradicting), criticising past statistics for having errors, yet it itself acknowledges that it hard to get a proper estimate, among other things because the concept of Persian (Fars) as an ethnonym is still quite alien amongst the people of Iran. Then it proceedes to throw a random statistic of what they could get. --HistoryofIran (talk) 21:46, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
- This was a study and survey, based on it people described what they are. It means there was not a list to choose what their ethnicity was, it's self-described.
