UK's membership to Customs Union

edit

The statetement is not supported by the footnote, 2.

"Monaco, the United Kingdom, and the British dependencies of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Jersey are integral parts of the EU's customs territory.[2]"

Footnote 2 (https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/business/calculation-customs-duties/rules-origin/customs-unions_en) only confirms Turkey, Andorra and San Mariona are members of the Customs Union.

San Marino

edit

Note that the source on the date concerning San Marino's entry links to the Europa site-- which gives the Customs Union signing date as Nov 27, 1992-- so it is impossible for San Marino to have a customs union starting in 2001. Most datasets will actually round this to a 1993 start date for the Customs Union. 66.254.229.229 (talk) 05:19, 27 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Channel Islands & Isle of Man

edit

These British Crown dependencies are part of the Customs Union but not fully part of the EU, the opposite of what is described in the "Territories" section 80.189.171.93 (talk) 14:11, 22 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I removed the statement. Thanks, Rob984 (talk) 14:34, 22 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Common External Tariff table

edit

I think this table should be removed. It's a moving target, does not exist on pages for other customs unions/blocs countries and presented in this form is a bit misleading. The source page from the WTO has a column which is missing from the table on Wikipedia. This indicates the % of the sector that is duty free. There's no indicator of how often the bound tariff is actually applied. It's not applied to poor countries on an exemption programme like Everything but Arms (EBA) or Generalised System of Preferences (GSP/GSP+) nor when an FTA between the EU and a 3rd country reduces tariffs(frequently to zero). 77.95.178.84 (talk) 14:46, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

I agree. The purpose and scope of the table is not at all clear: for example, the Turkey-EU customs union excludes agricultural products, so that is a whole section of the table that doesn't apply. IMO, we should just make it an external link. Any objections? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 23:20, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Once removed, rather than link to the static WTO page, would it not be better to link to the EU's full tariff page itself at http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/taric_consultation.jsp this keeps up with the moving target, and specific measures can be examined. The table here says the average tariff for tea/coffee is 6.1% to a maximum of 23%. I looked up black tea it's 0%. http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/measures.jsp?Taric=0902300000 109.151.240.233 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 02:00, 20 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
As no-one has objected, I am removing the table in favour an external link as per discussion above. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 17:45, 22 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

What does this mean? however it is currently unclear what the situation will be when the transition period ends.

Status of Northern Ireland

edit

The new status of Northern Ireland needs to be added. Is it a "non EU participant" or does it only have border controls and regulations that mean that it behaves as a participant in practice.

Is there an agreed term in the new Trade Agreement or the NI Protocol that describes its status that we could use in this page?

S C Cheese (talk) 14:02, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

From my understanding, it is technically not in the customs union, even for goods. But for goods, in general it behaves as if it were in the CU, and more importantly is also, for most intents and purposes, treated by the EU as though it were in the CU. For instance, if the EU had a 20% tarrif on imports of XYZ, this is levied at the ports in NI, even from Britain. And it's then free to move around the EU Customs territory. But – again, from my understanding – if the goods have documentary proof they were consumed in NI, this tarrif can be refunded, which isn't the case in the rest of the CU. I think just describing it as having "special provisions" is the most accurate, and some very light shading on the map – it isn't accurate to show it as being external in the same way GB is, because it isn't treated that way. - 88.98.194.179 (talk) 11:26, 29 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Northern Ireland is not part of the EU customs union and thus it should not be marked as so on the map. --Glentamara (talk) 12:21, 29 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I've added a minimal paragraph along those lines. S C Cheese (talk) 15:02, 29 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

New arrangements with Gibraltar

edit

As with Northern Ireland this should be mentioned.

Again it seems to be not a participant. But external customs handled by Frontex, and no barriers to goods at the border with the EU... including Spain.

What's the best term for this arrangement?

This page has already been updated: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effect_of_Brexit_on_Gibraltar#Brexit_Agreement

S C Cheese (talk) 14:42, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps we should simply wait until there is an actual agreement/treaty? No reason to rush. The situation is different from NI since the special provisions for NI are already in force. --Glentamara (talk) 14:51, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Minimal paragraph added. Needs references to the topics agreed to be negotiated including "bespoke arrangement" and substantially similar". S C Cheese (talk) 15:28, 29 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
