Purple Heart?
editThe article states that Carlson was given the Purple Heart for wounds received during World War I (1914-1918), but the Purple Heart was not restored until 22 February 1932. Prior to that, it had only been awarded during the American Revolutionary War. How could he get the Purple heart during the First World War? MishaPan 19:45, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
- Looks like it was actually Wound Chevrons which were "converted" to Purple Hearts on the restoration of that award. Should probably be re-worded to avoid the slight anachronism. David Underdown 20:23, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Balance
editA glowing tribute to Carlson without a single word of the controversy his ideas caused in the Marine Corps, attributing all kinds of change to Carlson without any documentation whatsoever--so POV it implies he remade the elite forces of the US Army also! Not worthy at this stage of any serious consideration for credibility.--Reedmalloy (talk) 04:02, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
Surrender controversy
editPlease read Tripp Wiles book "Forgotten Raiders of '42" to understand that this Marine should have been Court Martialled and stripped of rank despite his earlier accomplishments, as he attempted to surrender to an inferior Japanese force and retreated while the Marines had superiority. He left 9 fellow marines behind to be captured and beheaded. His surrender letter to the Japanese was later published in major Japanese newspapers to indicate to their citizens that the United States was a weak nation with weak and retreating fighters which boosted Japanese morale early in the war. This Marine should never have been decorated for his performance as commander of this raider team. His performance was a disgrace to The United States Marine Corps. One must note that the formation of this raider program was a collabrative effort between Carlson and none other than FDR's son. "Surely" politics have nothing to do with burying Carlsons horrific performance as commander in charge of the Makin raid! Let us set the record straight!
--Um, any documentation to back up what you're saying? Any signature to identify yourself to the community? Otherwise, it's really just, "Sez you!" TheBaron0530 (talk) 21:13, 30 November 2015 (UTC)theBaron0530
