Restructuring
editThis article could use some restructuring and cleanup--the top-level Origins, Design History, and Development sections contain some redundancies, and the purpose of each in relation to the entire article is not clear. There are also several missing citations, as well as some attributed to aviation author Bill Gunston with no reference to the publication in which they were made (not to mention the citation of Gunston as a "chief engineer" on the F-14, which I find no support for elsewhere). Using Greg Goebel's article at http://www.vectorsite.net/avtomcat.html as a source wouldn't be a bad idea. Bradeyh 05:16, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- As far as I can tell, the Bill Gunston as Chief engineer mention is left-over sneaky vandalism, or bad copying from a printed text. Either way, it needs to go. I have several books by Bill Gunston, so I might be able to match up the text to the right source. If you do use Goebel's site, be sure to footnote the cites, even though we aren't technically required to as it is Public Domain. Citing it just makes it easier to know where what came from. I haven't read his article, but those of his I have read are usually well written and researched. As far as the various headings, they seem to be leftover from the split from the main article. Feel free to change them as necessary. I've got a lot of other projects on my plate right now, but the Tomcat is one of may faves, so I will try to do what I can as I am able. - BillCJ 06:22, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
Article issues
editWhile performing a full copy-edit of this article, I noticed a number of issues that are now tagged. A few need to be specifically called out:
- There were claims about (presumably) living pilots named in the article that are not referenced. I have deleted these claims where they were potentially contentious as per WP:BLP. If this article mentions living people, those mentions must follow the policy on Biographies of Living Persons.
- There are statements about possible causes of misfires, etc., that are not cited to sources. This represents synthesis, a form of original research, which is prohibited. These statements need to be sourced or removed.
- The Iraqi section of the article is largely missing citations, and has a large number of weasel-word statements that need to be clarified or removed.
- Some of the references cited are forum posts. Being self-published sources, forum posts are generally not considered reliable.
