Facial expression and signed languages

I followed a link here from the sign language article, and was left unsatisfied. In many sign languages, facial expression does not just show emotion, it also expresses a large portion of the grammar of sign language. I can only add specifics about American Sign Language, but in ASL, the position of the eyebrows indicates a statement versus a yes/no question versus a wh- question. Certain mouth movements serve grammatical functions as well. A twitch of the nose carries meaning. While the term 'facial expression' is linked from sign language to here, there is no discussion in either location about the specifics of facial expression as it relates to sign language. Would that be better added to this article or the sign language one? Cwterp 13:17, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Gross

Under different "feelings" (Which is an odd word to describe things like snarl and flirt, which are not feelings, but facial expressions.. but that's beside the point) that can be expressed on the face Is the word Gross.. it makes zero sense to me as disgust is already on the list and the link leads to no other emotions.. i'm removing it.. apologies if it's just going above my head. examples of differnt facial expresions

The so called "Cleared as filed" (if that is her real name) has been following me around reverting all my attempts to add positive contributions to Wikipedia. As part of this vendeta they have reverted my adition of Kat Fletcher as an example of aa smug face. In the U.K. Kat Fletcher is well known (googler her and see) for her smag face, do other users agree that she could be added as an example of smugness?

no I don't agree that she should be on this page. She has nothing to do with facial expressions.

Nope, absolutely not. If nothing else, her face is smug more as a quality than an expression.

I like this chart of seven basic emotions that have universal body language across all cultures with pointers showing which muscles are used for each expression. BBC article

The referenced BBC article seems like very weak evidence for the claims that "Facial expressions and their significance in the perceiver can, to some extent, vary between cultures", and that "More recent studies in 2009 show that people from different cultures are likely to interpret facial expressions in different ways". A link to the original study would be helpful (and is missing from the BBC article), but as far as I can tell from the article the study only makes limited claims about correct identification of facial expressions in East Asian cultures (more likely to confuse "fear" as "surprise", "disgust" as "anger"), rather than claiming that different cultures have different facial expressions, or are likely to interpret facial expressions in different ways. Facial_expression#Facial_expressions cleanup needed

1. It lists six and then "other", which includes five of the six (or all six, if Joy = Happiness?)
2. not sure where the link from"Excitement" should go to
3. ..OK have fixed the A-Z order problem movign Love into place
4. Whole section (apart from the first set of 6) is unreferenced - more like a set of "See also" than an article section

It seemed to me that the article was relatively light on examples of facial exressions themselves, separate from the underlying emotions, so I split the second list into one based on emotional or mental states and another based on the expressions themselves (e.g., pout). Then I greatly expanded the second list, mostly using existing articles. I tried to limit myself to expressions that could be seen in a still photograph, since those that would require motion to discern might be considered facial gestures instead (although, that being said, I'm not sure if the distinction is entirely clear). Oh, and I renamed the section "List of facial expressions", since it's probably to be considered bad form to have a section named almost identically to the article it's in. - dcljr (talk) 06:45, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Moue and Pout

Jeopardy just used 'moue' and 'pout' in a question; so I entered moue and found nothing except redirecting here, which also has nothing. On the other hand pout has several options, one of which is to redirect here, also telling nothing. Can this article have a short list describing the facial expressions shown in the illustration in the article? Just asking, Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 20:40, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Just to let you know, there's a discussion at the copyright noticeboard for the image File:Pouting.jpeg, where someone claiming to be the person in the photo is stating that the photograph was taken without permission and they did not want it used in the article. Until this is cleared up, this photograph shouldn't be used in the article. This might be a case of someone trying to use Wikipedia to harass another person.

Although in general the photograph isn't ideal for encyclopedic use, since the photo is very blurry. This lends credence to the idea that it was taken on the quick and without the person's permission. (IE, someone was taking a quick picture and was told to "stop it".)
