Falkland Current vs. Malvinas Current
editThe current name of the article is incorrect. The dispute over the name of the archipelago is a long and complex topic, but this article is not about the islands, is about the marine current.
And the most common name in English is "Malvinas Current". At least that is the name for the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies [1], for the NASA [2] and for the NOAA [3]. There are also many scientific studies that they name the current in this way [4] [5].
The current name has nothing to do with the dispute over the islands, even the name is not translated (Malvinas, no Malvines).
Well, I believe the article should be translated, and the both names must be written in the introduction, for not obviate the "name conflict". --Daniel dj87 (talk) 05:22, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
- This is a collection of geographic scientific articles that need to be properly interlinked, and were not, until I put in quite a bit of time to do so. Science and Geography and Wikipedia and ordinary human beings need to be protected from those who want to re-fight the Falklands/Malvinas War on Wikipedia and don't care about the resulting collateral damage to the encyclopedia (a state of affairs that has already caused the Falklands Islands article to have to be semi-protected, as well as probably being partly responsible for the lack of proper interlinking between these articles before now). I don't care what the articles are called provided they are interlinked, and provided all 3 names (Falklands, Falkland, Malvinas) are given to facilitate those wishing to find more via a search engine. Proving that all 3 names are in use, Google currently gives:
- "Brazil–Malvinas Confluence" 8670 hits
- "Malvinas Current" 7310 hits
- "Brazil–Falklands Confluence" 1360 hits
- "Brazil–Falkland Confluence" 10500 hits
- "Falklands Current" 2670 hits
- "Falkland Current" 21200 hits
