Most important information absent
[edit]It is mind-boggling that an article about a festival doesn't mention the most important information: the dates. There is no mention of March 15 and you need to scroll down a bit to find the culmination on March 19. Instead, the date when it was included by UNESCO, sticks out in the introduction. --82.207.237.218 (talk) 21:49, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
Fixed It's even more mind-boggling that you didn't fix this egregious omission yourself. Carlstak (talk) 04:05, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

Requested move 20 January 2025
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Moved to Fallas. There's consensus for some sort of move, and the simpler name seems to be marginally the preferred option. — Amakuru (talk) 20:33, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
Valencia Fallas → Las Fallas – Preliminary searching suggests "Las Fallas" is the most common name for this festival, or at the least, that "Valencia Fallas" isn't. Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 17:46, 20 January 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. Dr vulpes (Talk) 04:29, 29 January 2025 (UTC)

- Obviously, in English language documents you're going to find Valencia Fallas, Fallas of Valencia, Fallas from Valencia,... and all those combinations with Falles (Catalan/Valencian spelling) instead of Fallas. I don't like the name change because there is another, less famous, celebration in a part of Catalonia, also called Falles. --Jotamar (talk) 21:55, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- Comment is there any reason not to simply move it to Fallas? It seems like the variations all center around Fallas, and the location (Valencia) being included in different forms based on language-specific variations, but not because the commonname is anything other than Fallas. Adding "Las" wouldn't fit our MOS per WP:THE wherein Las is effectively the same sort of article as the English use of "The". As far as the Catalonia it seems like there is a spelling difference and that would still only become an issue once an article exists; there is no PTOPIC concerns for a minor event without an article yet. TiggerJay (talk) 05:46, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
- No, there isn't any spelling change. Falles is the spelling for Catalan and also for Valencian (which for most practical purposes is the same language as Catalan). Notice that the word falla itself, meaning 'bonfire', is Catalan/Valencian, with no equivalent in Spanish (there is a Spanish word falla but it is unrelated in meaning). In fact all the vocabulary associated with the celebration is typically Valencian/Catalan, not Spanish: mascletà, nit del foc, ninot, plantà, cremà, ... --Jotamar (talk) 22:59, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
- Support as proposed, no reason to do anything besides the most basic. Red Slash 01:46, 31 January 2025 (UTC)
- I support a move to Fallas without the Spanish article. I do not think the Spanish article Las is appropriate here per WP:THE (as mentioned above. Living in Valencia, I never see reference to the festival as Falles save perhaps in fully Valencian texts. For example, this is one of the local newspaper website on the topic: https://www.levante-emv.com/fallas/. I support the observation that Valencia Fallas is out of step with the usage and also that Falles is unhelpful to English speakers who would rarely see that spelling. Literarytech lo dijo. Changing the Lead
[edit]The lead states as follows: The Fallas (Valencian: Falles; Spanish: Fallas) is a traditional celebration held annually in commemoration of Saint Joseph in the city of Valencia, Spain.
However, the main body of text only states uses Saint Joseph to explain why it is that specific date.
"Over time, and with the intervention of the Church, the date of the burning of these parots was made to coincide with the celebration of the festival of Saint Joseph It was traditionally held to celebrate any saint but to burn furniture. It was, therefore held annually to burn furniture. Only later does the catholic church come in and link it to St. Joseph".
The lead obliterates the local aspect of it and seems to subsume it into a religious origin which I think is not entirely accurate. However, I would like to know for what reason the lead is like this.
My specific issue with the linking of the event "Fallas" with commemoration. Would it not be more accurate to state it coincides with the St. Joseph day?
My proposed alternative would be:
The Fallas (Valencian: Falles; Spanish: Fallas) is a traditional celebration held annually which coincides with Saint Joseph day in the city of Valencia, Spain. Chefs-kiss (talk) 17:02, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- Suggesting that the date is a coincidence is not a good idea. I'lll try a different wording. --Jotamar (talk) 23:24, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
- Done. I guess that the concepts of Patron saint and Calendar of saints are strange for non-Catholics. --Jotamar (talk) 23:40, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Jotamar First, I didn't say that the date is coincidental, I said that the date coincides, the reasoning why it coincides is not arbitrary which I never said it was. Secondly it is not that the concept is strange, it is that I don't agree with stating that it originates from catholicism which is what the lead made it seem. I'm literally from this region so me wanting to change this is not because of not understanding catholicism. Thirdly and the reason why I answered is I don't like the fixed phrasing because it is wordy and it was not explained why you did not like my phrasing which is more concise. Chefs-kiss (talk) 23:24, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Chefs-kiss: The important thing is not what you understand, but what the readers are going to understand. My wording tries to clarify matters for people from anywhere in the world. In any case, the information about the Fallas being a patronal festival could be moved to another part of the lead. --Jotamar (talk) 18:17, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
- Moving it could also be an alternative option. It just feels overly wordy where it is right now. Chefs-kiss (talk) 11:05, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
- Moved. --Jotamar (talk) 22:55, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah but i still don't see why what i suggested is not suitable? As I explained prior
