While the black figure is portrayed at a time when the Dutch were involved in the transport and use of slaves, the statement that a slave is portrayed in the painting is conjecture rather than established fact. That the figure is black is rare and notable in itself. Agreed. The cited reference refers to a "black boy" only, in Catalog nr. 102 of the Royal Academy Winter Exhibition in 1906. Now amended. William Harris • (talk) • 11:52, 4 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
