Role of Stadler

Is it possible to know the reasons why it is thought that Stadler "completed" this Fantasia ? Could these reasons be explained in the article ? Thanks. Marvoir (talk) 17:07, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

Well, Mozart's manuscript of the piano-and-violin version breaks off at the exposition, suggesting that the completion stems from someone else; the obituary published by Ignaz, Baron von Mosel for Stadler in 1833 in the Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, etc. (quoted in the NMA preface for the violin sonatas, Vol. 2) notes that it was him. But it seems inconceivable that Mozart would have given the violin such a minor role in the work, as Hans Eppstein pointed out in 1968 (see the NMA preface for the individual piano pieces, Vol. 2), and it is possible that there may have been an original Mozart autograph of this piece in a version for piano solo that continued beyond the exposition. As for Stadler's completion of KV 396, it is musically so good that I will simply quote Beethoven on the Requiem: "If Mozart did not write the music, then the man who wrote it was a Mozart".
