Troubled marriage

edit

According to historian Frank McLynn, there is evidence suggesting that Antoninus Pius had a troubled marriage with Faustina. This is according to the Historia Augusta (Antoninus 3.6) and The Caesars by Julian. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.147.120.175 (talk) 16:22, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Right, the Historia Augusta claims that the divine Faustina had a lascivious disposition, and the divine Antoninus Pius sometimes had difficulty reining her in. This is one of those areas where the Historia Augusta (a) uses a familiar trope that was also used to discredit many other powerful ancient women and (b) flies in the face of what other evidence is available (e.g. the fact that Antoninus held Faustina up as a model woman in her lifetime and afterwards). We shouldn't put undue weight on a trifling slander from a notoriously unreliable source. Q·L·1968 15:36, 22 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
