Title &c.
editJust in case someone starts wondering: ["fear of mice" -musophobia] gives 18,000 hits; while "murophobia" is a propagated typo, "mysophobia" is fear of dirt, and "suriphobia" is not registered by serious dictionaries yet (and by the way, what the heck does it mean? "Rat" is rattus. Or it is Greek for mouse?). `'mikka (t) 07:02, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- I think the title should be musophobia. It looks neater. It's also the technical term... and this is an encyclopedia. riana 05:54, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
- The title should be the most used one. And until a real doctor comes here and tells me that it is a widely used "technical term", I will not take it for granted. `'mikka (t) 06:35, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
- The combination form of the Latin mus is mur-. It may be that the current article incorrectly notes the origin of the stem is Greek. In the Century Dictionary, the Greek word μυς (mus) "mouse" is noted in the etymology of "mouse", but is inferred as cognate to the Latin word and stem and not as an origin of the word. Both muro- and muri- conform to stems of Latin origin. And, even that it may not be a typo and may be more recognizable as being related to the word for mouse, muso- is not the correct stem used for "mouse" or any other member of the family Muridae, to include those of the genus Mus. The validity of the word musophobia is not voided by its non-conformity to expected etymology, but its validity is to be determined by its usage. An indictor of its inclusion or absence of the term in a recognized lexical or medical resource is what is wanted. Do not place faith in the number of hits in Google as a determiner in which form of the word is correct. Lists of phobias filled with misspellings are propagated throughout the web, and greatly skew the results. Stuart M Klimek (talk) 06:39, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
General Cleanup Today
editI did not remove the tag requesting more sources, because most of the first few paragraphs remain unsourced. However, I dug up external cites and wikilinks for much of the rest of the article, including every piece I added. I deleted two items from the trivia section: a vague comment about a "lot of things" named "of mice and women" in a takeoff of Of Mice and Men; and an extremely arcane reference to a TV series in which one character states he has musophopbia. I also put suriphobia in the intro paragraph as 1. it redirects here and 2. I was able to find an etymology for it and 3. it's the reason I started looking this up today. Whether it's a new term coming into use, or an old term falling out of use, either way, it is still in use right now and the article should reference it.-- Lisasmall 19:47, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

1984
editThe main character in 1984, Winston Smith, has a fear of rats. Should this be a section in 'In Popular Culture'? BoredomJS (talk) 19:44, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
