- Oppose, due to the fact there should be a translation to English, one cannot expect people from anywhere to identify this University by its local vernacular name (the same applies to university names from anywhere); also UFMG's the name is a string of titles, not a brand or anything trademarked. Discussion
edit- Add any additional comments
- I don't see a problem with having a translated name into the English language. If we are to discuss anything, it should be which the best translation is. Nevertheless, even that seems closed case, for most UFMG researchers already sign their international publications as affiliated to the Federal University of Minas Gerais. The only confusion that might arise is that outside the scope of the Federal Republic of Brazil, the name federal university can mean something else (e.g., see Federal University of London). I think it is already too late to change all Brazilian Federal Universities' English names, because Brazil has an extensive Federal Universities system and researchers affiliated to all these universities, not only the UFMG, are publishing their institutional name as Federal University. Therefore, one just needs a simple explanation of what Federal University means in the context of Brazil. Rva24 (talk) 18:22, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

UFMG wasn´t stablished in 1965. It was created in 1927 as UMG. There´s a huge painting on the Central Library (Biblioteca Central) that features then Governor of Minas Gerais, Antônio Carlos, founding the University on Independence Day, 1927.
Besides, FUMEC announces itself as 40-year old. It´s FUMEC who belongs to 1965. UFMG is older. Doidimais Brasil 02:13, September 3, 2005 (UTC)
Architecture
editThis section needed to be reworked to be less POV. I took the liberty of making some changes SaintCahier 01:20, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
The information box on the right (which lists the size of the endowment, the number of undergraduate students and graduate students, etc) gives a number for how many "staff" the university has. Surely this is supposed to say "faculty"? If not, the number of faculty should definitely be added!
Does anyone mind if I delete the architecture section altogether? Someone finds the campus ugly, right, but it really is just an opinion. Maybe it could be incorporated in larger criticism section, but I don't see how it is relevant on its own. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.62.176.160 (talk) 04:04, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
I agree that the present "Architecture" text should be deleted. Perhaps one should contact the university architects (Departamento de Planejamento Físico e Obras - DPFO) to add a more professional information to it, with comments also from the UFMG School of Architecture? --Mapereira (talk) 19:40, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Numbers
editI updated all the numbers in the article based on the numbers found on the Portuguese version of the university's website, because even the ones in the English version are outdated. 189.59.152.168 (talk) 04:30, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
Edit request: the Research section
editThis edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. |
- Specific text to be added or removed: In the Research section, some areas seem to have been priviledged in comparison to others. Some information there seemed rather institutional and thus should go to the Academic Units section.
- Reason for the change: The basis on which the research information there needs to be disclosed on Wikipedia needsjustification.
- References supporting change: PRPq-UFMG, Pesquisa na UFMG, Pesquisa e Inovação (UFMG).

The Academic Units Section
editThis edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
THE EDITOR NEEDS TO READ IN PORTUGUESE!
- Specific text to be EDITED: I edited the Academic Units section aiming to complete it, because before my edits it was incomplete and thus misleading. All subtitles I put there are exactly which Academic Units there are under UFMG. All information there is absolutely correct. Nevertheless, it can still be misleading for it is still incomplete. I do not have the time frankly to go through what each Academic Unit contains, or find references for information I know to be true due to the fact I'm an Alumni of UFMG. However, it seems like Wikipedia found me suspicious of putative COI, so I better not give that more time and leave it for a less allegedly interested part. Each academic Unit has three information that I find important to be on this Wikipedia entry: departments (except the Faculty of Letters, that is too anarchist to hold departments so they prefer non-administrative areas instead), undergraduate programs, and postgraduate programs. With these 3 information equally well provided to all Academic Units, I think the problem is solved.
- Reason for the change: I put some of this information for some of the schools/faculties/institutes, but I can't finish doing it and if I don't, the difference in information among Academic Units makes it seem like I priviledged ones over others. So it is just a matter of completing what I had done for the Faculty of Medicine, which is complete.
- References supporting change: From this, in Point 1, webpage you'll find all others you'll need, which is each Academic Unit's webpage. If the editor wants to go through the information disclosed at Points 2, 3, and 4, that would be nice, because this information is the core of how UFMG works. The editor needs to know Portuguese. If the editor wants me to contribute by editing their undergrad institution as well, we could do that change. I read in Spanish, Portuguese, and French, apart from English.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Rva24 (talk • contribs) 20:37, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
