Jewish reference

edit

Jack, it seems you are removing references to ethnicity from 'headers'. However, the fact that Nussbaum is Jewish (whether you consider this an ethnicity or a religion) is highly relevant, because it is the reason he had to flee and was eventually killed.

I don't see what's so offending about stating that Nussbaum is Jewish, so I reverted. If you can think of a 'less offending' (whatever the offence may be) of saying so (NOT DELETING THIS IMPORTANT PEACE OF INFORMATION), please rewrite.

And if there is a policy about ethnicity in headers, please enlighten me.

Yes, there is a guideline to this, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies), which says that header should mention "Nationality (In the normal case this will mean the country of which the person is a citizen or national, or was a citizen when the person became notable. Ethnicity should generally not be emphasized in the opening unless it is relevant to the subject's notability.) " I'm not going to fight you over it, but I don't think Nussbaum was notable for being Jewish, although of course his being Jewish can/should be mentioned in the entry, just not in the header of the article. So, in this case, we could say "Because he was Jewish, he did not return but lived in exile in Italy..." (ala regarding moving this bit from header into the article) Mad Jack 17:01, 10 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The style of writing in this article is flowery and full of POV and peacockery. I've tagged it until this can be copyedited. freshacconci talktalk 14:59, 2 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I've responded to your tagging by copyediting this article as part of the November Guild of Copyeditors drive. I've fixed a few grammatical errors throughout the article, but more significantly I've WP:BOLDLY removed a large amount of material from the article, per your original concerns. The vast majority of it is blatant original research, presented in the style of an essay, and almost certainly written by someone who considers themselves an expert on the subject. I very much doubt that any of it can possibly be attributed to reliable sources and so I think discussion about it is pointless, better to just get rid of it and concentrate on the facts in the article.
