Status of Figug

edit

Figuig is an oasis town within Algeria. As established by the 1972 line of demarcation. The entire region of El Arja and the countryside within it is within Algeria. Algerian soldiers have recently entered the border and clarified the territorial boundary between their country and morroco. This territorial boundary will come into full effect of Algerian sovereignty as of the 18th of March 2021. BlueWizArdi99 (talk) 14:28, 16 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

The current border dispute does not concern Figuig proper, which is uncontroversially part of Morocco, but rather the nearby palm groves of El Arja, owned by people from Figuig but apparently located on the Algerian side of the border (see e.g. https://www.tsa-algerie.com/algerie-maroc-tensions-dans-la-zone-del-figuig/ https://www.yabiladi.com/articles/details/107175/figuig-terres-d-el-arja-proprietes.html). If you have evidence that Algeria claims sovereignty over Figuig itself, please post reliable sources. Even if it did (which it never has AFAIK), that would not be sufficient to justify unilaterally editing the article to present such a claim as undisputed fact. - Lameen Souag (talk) 15:06, 16 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I am in complete accord with [User:Lameen Souag] on this. The territory at issue is the palm groves of El Arja and not the entire city of Figuig which is unequivocally under the sovereignty of the kingdom of Morocco; according to the sources listed below, the city of Figuig spans approximately 20 000 hectares, whereas the palm groves of El Arja is only 114 hectares. It is henceforth entirely unreasonable to claim or imlpy otherwise. Figuig is a Moroccan town. however, it lost lots of it's territory to Algeria since 1973, namely the eastern valley, Lmelias, parts of al Arja (not all of it), limited access to Zousfana valley. the Moroccan military also narrowed the civilian accessible territory, I am no longer able to visit some parts of the town I could visit just three years ago, I can attach a map if necessary.
