Talk:Fiordland penguin
Weka
editWeka is not an introduced species for New-Zealand, therefore i will remove it from the list. Its an indigenous species. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.49.134.179 (talk)
- I've clarified this point in the article Smallweed 17:24, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- I am not aware of any conservation actions against Weka that aim to support Fiordland penguins; as a matter of fact Weka itself is listed as vulnerable. Therefore, I believe grouping Weka with introduced predators is not justified. Also references should be provided. c00ch 14:04, 7 January 2009 (NZST).
Diet
editHi
I have been reading the table of dietary measurements in [1] p. 545, also by Yolanda Van Heezik (same as ref used in the article).
For instance it mentions that the FCP has a reasonably large percentage of Ahuru (Auchenoceros punctatus) in its diet, but this is not mentioned in the article at all.
It seems there is a pretty large discrepancy between it and the info in the article. Can someone check it for me and make sure I have not read it incorrectly somehow?

- You appear to be quite right, that's the problem with generalising from a single study. There is a good summary at [2], basically the diet depends on when and where and how it is measured. I think we should stick to DOCs description, something to the effect of "main diet is juvenile squid, octopus, krill and small fish" [3]. --Tony Wills (talk) 18:18, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
- The study and the links you gave do seem to concur on tht rough ratio, bu this seems to be during the nesting seasson. The Te Ara Encyclopaedia of bids gives more general info "They eat squid, fish and crustaceans..." [4] although it then says "...feeding on the narrow continental shelf out from the western coast during breeding."
- Is the octopus is seasonal? Chaosdruid (talk) 03:04, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
Feedback
editI would like to contribute to this page but i would like feedback. I feel like talking about the habit and migrating would strengthen this page. Ahaynes 1102 (talk) 21:46, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
- You are welcome to start editing it. I will keep an eye out and help as you go. Agree these areas need bolstering on this page. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 22:09, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
