Canada-specific info
editLarge parts of this article are weirdly Canadian. (Nothing against Canada.) Sections of it are very Canada-specific, but the headers are general (e.g. "Fire prevention division"). The section following that one is again titled very generally, but is totally US-specific. I feel like the article should either be reworded in a more general manner, or should have country-specific sections put in, if we're going to talk about individual fire prevention groups. Really, the whole thing should probably be trimmed down to actually just be about fire prevention techniques, since it isn't titled "list of fire prevention GROUPS," and I'm sure that content is already under "fire department," etc. But I don't want to do it. Anybody else? Jessicapierce (talk) 22:13, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
Clean-up 28 July 2020
editI've made a start at cleaning this article up and trying to adjust the tone to be more encyclopaedic. I'm no subject matter expert in fire prevention but I think I was able to shift the focus to more of an informational article than an instructional one. A couple of things I wondered on my travels, but didn't get the chance/have the confidence to do anything about:
- The section on wet pipe sprinkler systems seems irrelevant to this article in my view. Sure, they might be discussed during a fire prevention seminar, but the way that section is written makes it seem like it doesn't belong on this article.
- It's still very US- and Canada-centric, and I didn't do much with the last two sections to remedy this. I don't have the brain bandwidth right now to properly overhaul those sections with the attention they deserve. I think I was able to 'genericise' much of the rest of the article, though.
- I'm not sure about the relevance of the Vision 2020 mention in the lead.
- I had a look through the references where I could, but didn't have the chance to give them a proper read through. In making the article less instructional I've probably made some points that could do with referencing.
I think it's in better shape than when I started (if I do say so myself), but there's definitely work still to do. Skylar MacDonald (talk) 18:25, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
Starting point of edits
editWhen looking at this page I found many areas that I think could benefit from strong edits. While I may not be a professional on fire prevention, as a technical editor I find that there can be a lot of beneficial improvements to this article. It has a strong base at this point, but there is always room for improvement! Over the course of the next few weeks, I plan on making the following bold edits:
- A complete restructuring of the sections. As an article about fire prevention education, I think the actual education lessons should be at the forefront of the article. This can then be followed by the audiences being targeted by these lessons
- I also think as mentioned in previous discussions, the Canada-centric section need to be looked into on its relevance. It feels to be more of a directory to Canadian references that could be misleading to the encyclopedic structure that this article needs.
These are just the starting edits that I have noticed, but as I dive into this article I will update this talk page and hopefully help improve the overall quality of this page! Editingenchilada (talk) 18:12, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
