If people will study the Federalist Papers they will see that Jefferson was pointing out the fact that we have a Federal Republic, which is a Union of the Several States. The Anti-federalist wanted a Democratic Republic where the majority of the people rule in all cases.
The electoral college was created to assure that the majority of States ruled in the selection of the President; therefore he represents the Federal Union and is bound to preserve it. This was to protect and prevent the eventuality of a few big cities overpowering the States.
That is why Jefferson said, "When (Americans) get piled upon one another in large cities as in Europe, they will become corrupt as in Europe."

editI am deleting an editorial comment thrown in in the first paragraph, commenting on how the president-vice president dynamics in the early days would create problems with the 2008 election. Seems unnecessary and totally out of tone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.186.223.115 (talk) 01:36, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

editQu'ran - Perhaps something should be mentioned that this was the book upon which Thomas Jefferson was sworn in? It is definitely noteable. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.3.7.81 (talk) 09:58, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
Merger Proposal
editI oppose User:Brad101's proposal to merge this article with the Presidency of Thomas Jefferson on grounds that there is a well-established precedent for the existence of a separate article for each U.S. President's inauguration. --TommyBoy (talk) 04:21, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- The discussion on the merger proposal is pending at Talk:Presidency of Thomas Jefferson. --TommyBoy (talk) 06:52, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
