Merger proposal

- To merge given that the martyrs are notable primarily in the context of the League of Left-Wing Writers, but also to expand the article from other sources. Klbrain (talk) 04:59, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
I suggest merging Five Martyrs of the League of Left-Wing Writers with League of Left-Wing Writers as the former is an integral part of the history of the latter. Having the martyrs as a separate page, while distinguishes their story, could easily be a subheading within the League of Left-Wing Writers page. Consolidating history and information about the League would allow the page to be built upon to a fuller extent.
@Zanhe, CWH, and Shi Gelei: Tagging for some feedback, y'all seem to have contributed the most to the League of Left-Wing Writers page and your take on merging Five Martyrs of the League of Left-Wing Writers into it would be appreciated. Diedrichb (talk) 18:38, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
- APPROVE Looks like a good idea -- no point in two stubs on essentially the same subject, especially if you plan to expand it. I have a draft article on the Seven Gentlemen in my userspace: User:CWH/Seven Gentlemen Incident, which you are welcome to edit or take over if you are working in this area. Thanks! ch (talk) 20:16, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
- Support for now - there are plenty of sources from which to write two full-length articles, but for the time being there's no point having two separate stubs. -Zanhe (talk) 08:26, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Zanhe: Appreciate the feedback, I'm working on merging the articles with sources from both, I disagree that a separate article for the Martyrs is necessary until a better variety of sources (specifically English for easy follow ups) is available. Until that day comes I'll continue working on merging into a single article.
- @DyinRich: There was a huge amount of intrigue surrounding the arrest and execution of the "Five Martyrs" (who were actually only five of the 23 or 24 communists executed on the same day). You can not only write an article, but make a whole movie out of it. For a glimpse of coverage available in English, see Politics and Literature in Shanghai. Another alternative is to write a broader article for the "23/24 Martyrs of Longhua" (see zh:龙华二十四烈士, which is a GA on zh-wiki) and make the "Five Martyrs" part of that. -Zanhe (talk) 19:42, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

- @Zanhe: I'm aware of Wong's work, it seems to be the only major English language publication I've come across besides his condensed article in Denton and Hockx's edited collection Literary Societies of Republican China and while his scholarship is valuable, I'd feel more comfortable with more than one author's argument being the basis for a separate article and yet without translations of Chinese articles I don't think a separate article can stand on its own (for now). I'll look into the article on the 23/24 Martyrs of Longhua, sadly my Chinese is novice at best and google translate is not always the best option. If you have time I think we can work together on this making English language Wikipedia on this topic stronger. DyinRich (talk) 19:58, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
- Merger complete. Klbrain (talk) 04:59, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
