What should we use for now?

edit

In between the new flag and the removal of the old one, there are still icons of the old flag in records of elections and whatnot - should we use a blank icon? — Preceding unsigned comment added by OfficerCow (talkcontribs) 06:59, 3 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

That doesnt make any sense. Wikipedia isnt a Mississippi meta-government or arbiter. Nothing changed. — Smuckola(talk) 09:03, 3 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
In accordance with standard practice on Wikipedia, when flags are used in articles about elections, sporting events and similar pages, the appropriate flag to use for the infobox is the flag that was in use at the time of the event which may not necessarily be the current flag. Therefore the former flag is probably the most appropriate one to use for articles about events before 30 June 2020. For examples where controversial flags are used in infoboxes see, 1989 South African general election, 1998 Georgia gubernatorial election, 1938 German parliamentary election and referendum. There is a parameter on the infobox that allows for the appropriate flag for the year: | flag_year = 2001 | flag_image = Flag of Mississippi (2001-2020).svg For Icons, there are also templates that can be used for flag year:   Mississippi You can find a complete list of flag templates available for Mississippi here Template:Country data Mississippi Cordyceps-Zombie (talk) 10:56, 3 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I just saw the twitter of an NBC reporter that the flag of MS is temporarily replaced with Bicentennial flag in the Capitol Subway. Should that be the "acting" flag of MS so far?Johnson.Xia (talk) 04:07, 4 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I hope that one came from a native born and bred. EllenCT (talk) 00:02, 6 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Speaking as a Jew, we don't actually spell or pronounce the four-letter (four in hebrew) name of the deity in our religion - we consider it a violation of the 3rd commandment. I think Jews would find the statement a bit offensive. OfficerCow (talk) 05:21, 12 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

They’ve chosen the five finalists. Please help me insert the information

edit

I apologize in advance for not knowing how to do this and also if I’m mistaken for asking for help here.

Here’s where I got the news from at 11:53am Central Time.

https://www.wapt.com/article/mississippi-flag-commission-to-narrow-choices-down-to-five/33632706

I tried to insert a screenshot of the five finalists here but couldn’t copy and paste.

Thanks for reading. Sweetpeagirl (talk) 22:28, 18 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

I have made an SVG version of the most popular of the finalist flags.

I added a composite image of the final finalists. Due to uncertainty over their copyright status (MDAH states "pending clearance of intellectual property rights)" I added just a low-resolution image with a fair use claim Matthewmayer (talk) 08:59, 22 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Effective date?

The way the House Bill 1796 is worded, it appears the state legislature has to officially adopt the new flag after its approval by voters: "then the Legislature shall enact into law the new design as the official Mississippi State Flag during the next regular session of the Legislature after the election.". If that's the case then the new flag isn't official just yet as the infobox purports. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 12:08, 4 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I came here to say the same thing. It should probably be reverted until the voters' decision has taken effect. /Julle (talk) 03:48, 5 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Per this source, the new flag is already in use in the state in many places. The legislature has to approve the referendum, but it's mandated to go by the referendum's results. As long as we make it clear in the text that the legislature still has to approve it, as we already do in the infobox. BilCat (talk) 00:21, 6 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Blue bar color on previous flag versions

edit

State flag (1894–1906)   State flag (1996–2001)   State flag (2001–2020)

As you can see, the blue bar and the Confederate saltire on the middle flag (1996-2001) are a lighter shade than that of the other two. Does anyone know if this is in anyway official? If so, we need to make some changes to the flags at 2001 Mississippi flag referendum. If not, then the middle flag here need to be corrected. Thanks. BilCat (talk) 23:58, 6 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I don't think the exact shades were specified pre-2001 so the variation in colors is just a way of reflecting that. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 02:32, 8 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks. That may need some clarification then. BilCat (talk) 02:42, 8 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
I suspect Illegitimate Barrister is right about the variation, but in that case what is the difference between the 2nd and 3rd versions? They look the same, as nothing changed in 2001. Venqax (talk) 20:08, 11 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

1894 flag at Walmart

edit

When I moved to Mississippi in 2002 from overseas I had never once seen a Mississippi flag at a Walmart. It was conspicuous because when I went to a Walmart in Alabama, I noticed a state flag. I had a little mental dialogue in my head, and then I thought perhaps Walmart was abstaining because of the design. I have (prior to flag change) only seen two American flags where other Walmarts would have a national and state flag side by side.

Confederate Design

edit

The confederate war flag in the canton is not the only bit of confederate symbolism in the previous flag. That flag, with its broad three stripes, is actualy the first flag of the confederacy, the ‘stars and bars’, with the circle of stars removed from the canton, and replaced with the confederate war flag. Georgia still has this design in its current flag.

Some notice of this should be taken in the article. It was the reason they did not just replace the war flag in the canton with a magnolia, but adopted a whole new design. All info must be properly sourced, of course. 2601:647:667F:8610:985C:C79D:3F18:7B5A (talk) 20:15, 3 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
