Flagellant Anti-Semitism
editAccording to the History Channel, flagellants during the Black Death had a habit of torturingand murdering Jews, accusing them of poisoning wells, which caused the Black Death, according to them. This might be worthy of inclusion into the article.
Not just the Flagellants but Europeans in general. ThePeg 15:33, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
True, but let us not forget that a lot of what was done to Jews was not like modern-day "Anti-Semitism." A lot of the writings of various heretics at that time show that Jews were not disliked for being Jews as a race/ethnicity as much as the fact that they tended to be the most obvious exploiters of the peasantry. A lot of the writings of the heretics in the Peasant Wars era wanted Jews to convert, not to kill them. The lunatic notions of Jews being a race, and one born to exploit, came about later in the era of emergence of nations, and the rulers used them to deflect attention from themselves when it came to exploitation of the peasantry. As Karl Kautsky said, the poor Jews became the scapegoats for the antics of the rich Jews who helped the Tsar in Russia by giving him money. Truthfully, I think it's far more relevant that "goths" and Satanists who hate Christianity as a given use things such as flagellism in their rituals when they were done first by Christians.JBDay 20:14, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
There is conjecture as to whether flagellants during the Black Death were responsible for violence against Jews. There were chroniclers who wrote of specific incidences of violence against Jews at the hands of flagellants. As with many sources in Medieval popular culture, one has to consider the source. Church and secular authorities were writing about a movement which was both critical of Church power and immensely popular among common people. They would have had a motive to associate the flagellants with acts of violence. Furthermore, pogroms during the Black Death were committed with or without flagellant participation. I would also like to note that the article claims that monks and priests often joined the flagellants. According to John Aberth ("The Black Death: The Great Mortality of 1348-1350"), "Technically, monks could not join the flagellants because they were cloistered, whereas friars, whose vocation allowed mobility, were ideally suited to the flagellants' wandering lifestyle."--ParlorSoldier (talk) 03:01, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
in popular culture
editIs there call to add a section for popular culture references to flagellation? Like the Judge Turpin song in Sweeney Todd (the original stage performance cast album), the elbino in The Da Vinci Code, the monks in Monty Python & the Holy Grail, Rammstein videos, and so on? (I mean beyond the mere "see also" section.) Medleystudios72 (talk) 19:44, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Possible literal biblical interpretation of Paul?

The NASB translation uses "I discipline my body", the NWT uses "I pummel my body" (french "je bourre mon corps de coups").66.11.179.30 (talk) 02:52, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Dominicus Loricatus
editIn the history section it says he recited the entire psalter 20 times in one week, accompanying each psalm with 100 lashes. There are 150 psalms * 20 times = 3000 psalms read. 3000 psalms * 100 lashes = 300,000 lashes. There are 604,800 seconds in a week. If he never slept, and managed a whip strike every two seconds, this is barely possible. -rddurant 24.245.39.61 (talk) 23:25, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
Merger proposal
editSince there is Flagellation, Flagellant confraternities, Self-flagellation, and a broader historic topic Mortification of the flesh, I suggest to merge this article into Flagellation prokaryotes (talk) 01:14, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
- Better I think to merge Flagellant confraternities (which actually only covers a certain period in Central Italy) here. Johnbod (talk) 02:13, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
