A fact from Florida State Hospital appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 9 October 2007. The text of the entry was as follows:
|
"People seem to disappear"...
editRemoved the pretty heavy statement that "People seem to disappear in the hospital." Just on a whim I decided that the citation would be an interesting news story to read. It turned out it didn't support that statement at all! The cite was: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D0CE7DE1339F930A35751C0A967958260&sec=health&spon=&pagewanted=print
Also, I removed the description of the movie referenced. This isn't an article about that movie, and that movie wasn't a documentary. --joeOnSunset (talk) 07:25, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Notoriety
editThe statement that the hospital has been the subject of "numerous investigations over the years" for the mistreatment of patients has three sources, none of which supported the statement. Two were simply gone, having been hosted on such reliable sources as AOL Hometown. The last doesn't mention an investigation. I don't doubt that the hospital has been investigation (it's been around awhile, and even a reputable, private, non-mental hospital would have seen investigations.) So I've left the statement, but removed the bad references. They were:
"Final report of the Committee on State Institutions to the Legislative Council in January 1961". Retrieved 2007-10-03. {{cite web}}
: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |month=
(help) (Yeah, on AOL Hometown. Okay. Now missing anyway.)
"Advisory Council on Mental Health - 1975". Retrieved 2007-10-08. (Missing.)
"Ernest D. Acker Papers". East Tennessee State University. Retrieved 2007-10-09. (Doesn't support.)
Chris Calhoun
editI know that more direct references to Chattahoochee_(film) have been removed from this article, but it is worth linking to Chris Calhoun, the former Florida State Hospital patient who inspired the film? A series articles in the Tampa Tribune based on letters written during his stay there were largely responsible for investigations of patient abuse (one of the broken links removed by joeOnSunset). I've found an article from the Orlando Sentinel detailing these events. Does anyone have access to Tampa Tribune archives so it can be properly sourced (online archives only date back to 1995)?
