Article name
editThis article should be renamed Otago Stadium as this is now the working name of the Stadium Trust
- Fair point, though it is still (un)popularly known as the Awatea Street Stadium - as such it should use this name as a redirect at least. I'll move it. Grutness...wha? 22:30, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
If you type in Dunedin Stadium into the Wikipedia search, you will see a disambiguation page with this page being one of the options. Many people will think of this stadium as the stadium in Dunedin, or the Dunedin Stadium. I think very few will remember (or even be able to spell) Forsyth Barr stadium. Because it will be so hard to remember even with advertising, one of the other names given in this Wikipedia article will become the name everyone knows it by. I think the Otago Daily Times should do a poll to see what people think the name is or should be. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.224.14.7 (talk) 00:59, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps they should. Unfortunately, though, any such poll will not take precedence over the official naming rights for the stadium, which are held by Forsyth Barr. In any case, as the dab page will no doubt point out, the name "Dunedin Stado=ium" has already been used (it is the former name of the building on Victoria Road now known as Dunedin Ice Stadium). Grutness...wha? 01:55, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
- The dab also has Dunedin Stadium (Florida). Looking under "what links here" for this article, redirects only [1], there are some other names also - "Otago Stadium" comes here for example, and you're welcome to add any others. This official title is a bit of a mouthful - if there is a predominantly used common name, verifiable via newspapers, sports groups, etc, then this article could be renamed per WP:COMMONAME. I think it'd be better to look at this after it's built and utilised. The ODT has a contact us page if you have a poll suggestion. XLerate (talk) 02:38, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
- I think the whole issue of the stadium is so contentiuous you'd largely get facetious suggestions for a name (and FWIW I work for the ODT...). Grutness...wha? 05:44, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
- A Google search reveals that stuff.co.nz, The New Zealand Herald, the ODT, and even the Carisbrook Stadium Trust all refer to it as the new Dunedin Stadium. This search turns up over 1 million hits. Searching for Otago Stadium turns up about 100,000 hits, and Forsyth Barr Stadium turns up 6,900 hits. This makes precisely the point above. Dunedin Stadium is already the default name people are calling it on the web. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.224.14.7 (talk) 01:59, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- A Google search restricted to NZ sites yields 66,200 hits for Dunedin Stadium, 61,200 for Otago Stadium, and 3,500 for Forsyth Barr Stadium. The current full name of the stadium gets about 2,000 hits.
- It may be the default name people are using on the web, but no one name has yet emerged in Dunedin itself as the common name. Until one does, it makes sense to use the current full name of the stadium. I dare say if you searched "Cake tin" you'd get just as many hits as Westpac Stadium, even though the former of those two names is simply a nickname, and not one used much "on the ground" in Wellington. This article is at the stadium's official name, and there are redirects or similar links in place where needed at other widely-used names. That's a standard way for such things to be done with other stadia - no reason why it shouldn't be done this way with this one, at least until some one widespread common name emerges. By the way, part of the reason why "Dunedin stadium" gains so many hits is that a considerable number of them are about the Dunedin Ice Stadium (which was formerly called the Dunedin Stadium and is sometimes still referred to as such). Grutness...wha? 02:38, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- The comment above didn't advocate changing the name (of the stadium or this wikipedia article) to Dunedin Stadium, did it? It just made the point that many people are calling it the Dunedin Stadium. This is true on the ground throughout Otago and NZ media. Glancing through the first few pages of that Google search reveals that about 20% are about the Ice Stadium. Most people view the stadium as being primarily in Dunedin, and only secondarily in Otago. If they built it in Middlemarch or Alex, it would be more plausible to call it the Otago Stadium, IMHO. I also get the feeling that many people in greater Otago who did not want to pay for the stadium via the Otago Regional Council call it the Dunedin Stadium because they feel it is really for Dunedinites, not for them. These are nuances, but worth mentioning. Regarding Cake tin: when you do a Google search on Cake Tin, it only comes up twice in the top 10 as being about the stadium. When you search on Dunedin Stadium, 80% are about the stadium, and many are media reports using the name. If the ODT and NZ Herald repeatedly call it the Dunedin Stadium, it is hardly a nickname. Even the Carisbrook Stadium Trust calls it that. If anything, Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza is the least known name of all those mentioned in this article. On the other hand, the stadium isn't even built yet, and having Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza plastered everywhere in the stadium will raise public awareness of the actual name. Generally speaking, a stadium name should not be six words long. That's why these other possible names will even have a chance.--MoebiusFlip (talk) 10:03, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
- The comment above didn't advocate changing the name, no - but the discussion in this section is about just that (check the statement which started it). As such, I took it to be about that - if it wasn't, apologies, though I'm not sure what else it could have conceivably been about. Personally, I think the name of the article will eventually be changed, once it becomes clear what the stadium is going to be called by the public at large. At the moment, though, that's still in a state of flux with several possible choices, at least one of the main ones of which (as pointed out) is pretty ambiguous. It's wort noting the similarity of this name, BTW, with what was IIRC the former official name of AMI stadium, "Jade Stadium at Lancaster Park". Grutness...wha? 19:39, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
- ODT dated 15 September officially stated that it will be know as Otago Stadium. Time to change the name? Also, can some one with contacts at the Carisbrook stadium trust see if we can get an artists impression for the article - would be great to see it in all it's glory! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.29.106.59 (talk) 02:49, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

- Here is the article:[2]. It is misinterpreted above - "Forsyth Barr may be barred ... during the Rugby World Cup", "Instead, the stadium is expected to be named the Otago Stadium for the 2011 event". XLerate (talk) 03:23, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- Please view documents here, that show the non-commercial brand as Otago Stadium: http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/AK0810/S00154.htm - You can also type www.otagostadium.co.nz It was officially branded Otago Stadium, so I don't see why there is any debate about what it is called. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.29.106.59 (talk) 03:08, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
- The Scoop press release is from October 2008, in January 2009 it was named "Forsyth Barr Stadium" [3]. www.otagostadium.co.nz says "Forsyth Barr Stadium" throughout the page, 5 times by my count. The former/possible special use name Otago Stadium redirects here and is listed in the alternate names. XLerate (talk) 03:38, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
- I think maybe the point is that most other stadiums are listed under their non-commercial name - eg AMI Stadium is found under Lancaster Park. Should the main title be Otago Stadium and have Forsyth Barr... redirected to Otago Stadium? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Denemc (talk • contribs) 07:44, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

I don't think so - looking at List of stadiums in New Zealand contradicts the non-commerical theory, and such a method isn't in line with WP:NC. Lancaster Park went by that name for 117 years, and looks to be the exception. I think the two options are official name or a common name, both of which are the current title - using ODT articles from 2009 to determine common name. XLerate (talk) 10:47, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Just to open up this debate again, should the At University Plaza appendage now be removed. According to google news "Forsyth Barr Stadium" without the at University Plaza gets 598 hits [4] and "Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza" gets 8 [5]. AIRcorn (talk) 01:49, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Mmmmm. Maybe. It is the official name, though, and if you look at the google results for "Forsyth Barr Stadium" you'll see that the top few all use the full name. Perhaps it's a case of "add a redirect for now and see what it's called once it gets its own website". Grutness...wha? 01:59, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- It seems to mainly call itself Forsyth Barr Stadium on its website [6], although it does use the full name in the description. AIRcorn (talk) 02:48, 18 May 2011 (UTC) AIRcorn (talk) 02:49, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Fair enugh. Couldn't see a link to its website via google, strangely. In that case, it might be as well to change the page name. Grutness...wha? 22:32, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Sweet. I boldly unbolded the other names as it was getting a bit much. Feel free to rebold any that are still relevant. AIRcorn (talk) 05:11, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Out of date information
editIt says in the article "due to begin late in 2009", which obviously needs some attention. At the same time, the SH88 could be confirmed. I wasn't sure once I read it whether the realignment was still to happen, or it has happened already (with the article just being out of date), or whether plans have changed (as indicated later in the article).
