Death of Ledyard

edit

This article specifies which British officer killed Ledyard and how he was killed. However the article about the battle of Groton heights mentions two British officers. Nevertheless, a study done around 1900 cast doubt on the whole episode. I recall one conclusion in particular was that no one actually saw Ledyard killed. One person who claimed to be an eyewitness was much too far away to have seen. I think another instance was a person who saw the British enter the fort but didn’t actually see Ledyard killed. Another conclusion I remember clearly is that Ledyard was probably killed by a bayonet from his right side. One argument was that a British officer approaching Ledyard would have had a sword in his right hand. So it is unlikely that he took Ledyard’s sword in his left hand and thrust it through him. The article needs to be reviewed with a critical eye to sort out facts from folklore. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 23:57, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

The episode as described in the article is quite literally carved in stone at the Fort. It is not folklore. —
