Mormon Involvement
editWhile it is true that the Bear River Massacre was not carried out by the Mormons, they were certainly supportive of Connor's actions. There are anti-Shoshone articles in Utah and Mormon newspapers prior to the massacre and the people of Salt Lake cheerd when Connor came marching his troops into Salt Lake after the massacre. Also, the Shoshone claimed land thoughout southern Idaho, northern Utah, and western Wyoming but the massacre took place within a few miles of mormon settlements and within a few miles of Utah. The Mormons took over the northern half of the Cache Valley just after the massacre along with the Bear River Valley and elsewhere in what was Shoshone country. How and why does anyone want to exonerate the Mormons from the Bear River Massacre? Other than some point of faith, what is the point in a historical context? You could exonerate any settlers in the West from any atrocities against Native Americans using similar arguments. You can say, "it was the bad people that did the dirty work...the military. ...the bad cowboys. ...a rogue gang of men. The good settlers who got all the land were totally inocent." Please, let's not use wikipedia as a venue to show our peers how faithful we are.
Thanks,
